Hi, I am a twenty six years old man. A month ago I started going to the gym. The reason why I made this step is because I was not satisfied with my looks. It was all very strange to me but now I am getting the hang of it plus I am shaping up. There are few guys in my group that are really lifting heavy weights. I have noticed that they wear weight belts. They say that it is there for security. What is weight belt really used for and should I wear it too?

Hi, I think it is great when someone decides to get physically activated. This is important for the general state of health as well as for building up of self-esteem. As for your question, you said it yourself that the men in your group are heavy weight lifters. Weight belt is there for protection. When you are involved in hard physical activity, such as heavy weight lifting, your muscles are under a lot of stress. The one that can suffer the greatest consequences is pleura. This is a kind of wall in the stomach area that keeps the intestines where they are supposed to be. Some organs are attached to it as well. If under a lot of pressure, it can break. As a result, a medical condition called hernia occurs. Weight belt is there to protect the pleura from gapping. You can wear it too since it can not cause you any harm and if you start to work out more intensively, I would suggest you to make it a part of your gym uniform.
