I had a bunion surgery on 12-31-08 (shortened the first metatarsal and fused it with medial bone), and have 3 screws and a metal plate now.
I will be getting my hard cast off in a week (I've been non-weight bearing for the past 6 weeks) and am wondering how painful it's going to be to walk on my foot... I am still experiencing daily pain even though I'm not using the foot at all, but I figure that it's to be expected with this complicated of a surgery. But I know that every time I move my big toe at all it hurts pretty badly.
Should I expect a few days (or weeks) of significant pain while I'm adjusting to walking again? Is this normal? Should I request a refill of my pain meds just in case? I really want to get the foot healed so that I can walk on it, and I know the only way I'll get it strong again is by just DOING it, but if it hurts bad, I don't know if I can force myself to do that...
Thanks for any experiences or advice!
