One more thing... If if gonna take antihistamines for sleep. Remember to dry hydrated, and take good antioxidants. We don't need our cells drying out and rusting so to say ;) Best antioxidants I know of is Astaxanthan more powerful than Vita-C, selenium, folic acid, Vita-E. Astaxanthan takes the cake though ;)

Thanks so much for sharing that info. I'm actually off all of it now. Occasionally I do take a a Benedryl but really for allergies! Maybe 3 in months now. For me realizing my hormones are the cause of so many "conditions" like the sleep deprivation, I'm back to working out regularly. I'd also like to add that when we feel sleep coming on we should go to bed immediately! Waiting seems to screw it all up. It's like the need for sleep passes, so sleep when your body tells you to! So hard if working a night shift though!

melatonin is a natural sleep aid that the body actually produces itself. it is sold over the counter, near the vitamins. Trazadone and seroquel both need prescriptions. Benadryl, and other pm meds containing it, can cause anticholinergic effects like constipation. I would choose doxylamine over benadryl if i had to b/c less side effects. But melatonin over both

I'll make a note to remember this! thanks so much!

Doxy all the way. Diphehydramine actually makes me jittery. The main difference is the half-life, doxylamine has a half-life of 6 hours, and diphenhydramine has a half-life of 45 minutes. I have a slight to medium hangover effect depending on how late I take doxy because it has such a long half-life, but it disappears after I get out of bed.

I take Walmart brand Equate Nite Cough. It contains Doxylamine and it is really the only thing that helps me sleep. I have taken Ambien who gives me max 5 hours and have also taken Restoril which takes a while for it to take effect.  i know know that Unisom Sleep tabs contain this ingredient and I will purchase that.

They probably gave you seroquel because an underlying mental illness was causing your insomnia because seroquel is a very powerful antipsychotic medication.

I found adding potassium to my daily vitamin regime helps with sleep as I didn't realize how much sleep interruption was happening from leg and feet cramps. Yea exercise, boo cramps.  Because of hypoglycemia and kidney stones a lot of the foods naturally rich in potassium are off my list (bummer) so adding a supplement has really helped.  I use melatonin because I work in a completely artificially lighted environment.  Diphenhydramine works quite well.  Since I also have allergies which are exacerbated by our dog, the diphenhydramine serves double duty.

I've be a subject of sleep studies, and have suffered from insomnia (poor sleep: I often wake up due to over heating, constantly having to void, or actually can't sleep) for over 20yrs. I've been told through studies that I don't go into rem sleep as consistently as "most" ppl do (haven't done another study in 5 yrs). I have ocd tendencies and am a high self monitor. I am VERY tired of tying medication and have tried some Eastern medicine. Maybe I don't have the proper Eastern and Western doctors, please help.

Crazy, but true. I had a terrible time sleeping for 2 years, often sleeping two or three hours a night. I was terrified thinking how long before my body couldn't take this anymore. I used to be an occassional coffee drinker, until now. I was the one who stayed away from caffine, ate right, got a presciption for sleep medicine, and nothing I did was working. I just couldn't sleep more than 2-3 hours a night. For two years. I don't remember what even provoked me, but one night I decided, coffee sounds good, and I'll watch a movie. After drinking a couple cups and watching my movie, I was tired. Not giving a thought to why I slept a decent night sleep, it got me thinking the next night what I did to get some good sleep. I remebered the coffee, and thought it had to be a fluke. But, I'd try it, just to rule it out. I made a pot of coffee, drank a couple cups while watching a couple hours a realiaty TV. I was getting drousy and and tired. So I laid down, and got another decent night a sleep. I was convinced, and now sip on coffee til bedtime. I now sleep 7-8 hours every night, and have never had any sleeping problems since. I started to take notice that the people around me, who sip coffee all day long, not only slept better, but also were early bedtimers also. I don't want to promote this because I still get that crazy look when I tell people coffee cured my insomnia, but it worked for me. I recommend that if you only drink a cup in the AM or not at all, to start off slowly, maybe 24 oz throughout the day, I seem to being doing good now at 48oz per day. Sleeping well and feeling great, and thinking better and clearer too.
