Im a 35 year old maleproblem for over 15 years!! Its so hard to explain the feeling. I always said it felt how a elastic band would feel like when being stetched, right behing the belly button. I cant laugh cough bend over, nothen. It takes 4 hrs for it to go away. I have to lay down on my side on the bed for 4 hrs and not move. I have had a small bilacord hernia and that didnt stop the pain. If I do alot of bending over I can cause it hurt. If I were to reach into my car through the window and rest my stomach on the door and reach in pushing my stomach downward it will instintly cause the pain. I wish I could find out what this is. No doctor up here believes me and says its in my head becasue test have not shown anything!! Please help me with this!!

Hi there,
I'm a 14 year old girl.
This has just happened to me, it's happening right now.
It's a sharp searing pain behind my belly button, and it's like a string's attached to it.
It's not fun, and my parents think I'm being silly, but it really hurts.
I went to the bathroom and it started pulling and hurting really bad while I was peeing.
What is this ?
It's not from my period, I just finished it.
It's not gas... Gas is cramps, not a pulling ripping feeling in your belly button.
I'm NOT pregnant, and I know that for a fact.
So confused!

I'm just now having the same pain and I'm comforted to know that I'm not alone. It feels exactly like a string from my belly button to my clitoris. Because of the location and because it happens to men too, I'm guessing it's a nerve. It is probably getting pulled or pinched by abodomen muscles or tendons or something. That's no very scientific but I feel a little better about it now. It's probably nothing to worry about.

You guys described what I'm feeling to a tee! It has to be the worse pain I've ever felt, and it stays for days. I always have to be careful not to move, stretch, or reach, because the "string" will start to hurt. I always have to hunch over so I don't have to feel that sharp pain from my belly button to my clitoris. It also hurts when I urinate - sometimes ungodly other times bearable. I wish doctors would find out what's going on!
It's definitely confronting knowning I'm not the only one with this problem :-)

OK, obvious this is a really common problem, for both men and women. From what I've been able to tell, about half or so of the population have a "sensitive" connection between belly-button and groin: not including the ones who feel this stretch band of pain.
Well, there are a couple of possibilities that pop into my mind, that make me wish many GPs and other medical doctors would pay better attention to anatomy class at university!!
1. The umbilical cord, in a foetus, is connected to the bladder. Which in turn is connected to the Urinary Tract. And guess where that sits?
2. There are muscles that extend down the abdomen and attach to the pelvis/groin.
3. There are nerves that run across the front of the abdomen, and extend down to the pelvis/groin.
So my guess is, if you do some muscle or ligament damage or strain, there's a good chance of the pain transferring between the pelvis and the bellybutton: seem to be several possible culprits!
Doesn't seem to be a symptom of an illness or disease (other than the PAIN!!!), but might be worth working on improving strength, flexibility and general health of your lower abdomen. That will probably help if you do stretch too far and have a strain, which might be what's setting off the pain.
I would suggest the core muscles (not the six-pack, lets do sit-ups muscles) would be the best, as well as making sure your lower back is in good order, to prevent further strain on your stomach and belly button.
I'm gonna give this a go, see if it helps.

Well I'm almost 21 now, and ever since I can remember I've had these sharp pulling pains from my belly button down just like everyone else on here. These have happened for more than a couple times every month and every year that I've been alive. Can't stand up straight, have to slowly stretch it out, almost crying the whole time. Well, I asked my mom about it once and she said that my belly button wouldn't heal correctly when I was born, so the doctors put some nickel nitrate or something to help it heal. My guess is that scar tissue has built up and has made it difficult to stretch it since. I don't know about you guys, but I'm considering surgery to remove the scar tissue if it is that. I guess I have to see a doctor first to confirm it. But maybe it's a possible explanation for someone else out there? It seriously is an obstacle in life. Good luck!

I have had this problem on and off for years too. It is not just the stretching but the difficulty wearing clothes that touch it. It's not red or swollen, nothing coming out of it or anything gross like that it just hurts.
I found something online about Yeast inside your body that can cause this pain. I don't have a yeast infection but i do drink way too much on a daily basis and im guessing it could be yeast. OK that is gross to think about.
So, I want to the store and got a pro biotic in case it is yeast. We'll see if it works.
Good luck everyone!

I can't believe I found this forum.
I'm so relieved I'm not the only one!!! I'm 27, and this has been happening my whole life.
I've asked doctors and they have NO idea what I'm talking about. The one who actually attempted to give me an answer had to pull out some medical encyclopedia.
It's definitely like a "string" that's being pulled. Particularly when I urinate. It's like someone is pulling harder and harder until I have to stop mid-stream until the pain subsides, and then I'm almost afraid to finish.

Oh my god... i thought i was the only one who had these weird pains. Everytime i tried to describe the pain to anyone they looked at me like i was a freak!! It feels like my belly button is a plug and someone is trying to pull it out from the inside. The pain is excrutiating when i wee.

I have had the exact same problem and don't know what it is. This seemed to have started during my first and only pregnancy and happens a couple times per year. Everyone perfectly describes this feeling of a string pulling from the navel to the clitoris and I have the same problem while peeing. The problem always seems to go away after a couple of days on it's own. If it doesn't go away in the next 24 hrs I will go to Emerge and see a doctor this time. Will post what I find out!!!

I get this too, but it doesnt seem to happen to me on a monthy basis, it just randomly pops up sometimes! It doesnt last more than a day, and i either wake up with it or (like today) it just happened in the middle of the day. I knew this guy it happened to once, so i dont think its a girl thing but it could have to do with abdominal strain perhaps. As you said, it feels like a string is being yanked if i sit up straight, and if i do it too much by accident my whole vagina gets sore. I hope someone can figure this out...

My daughter is 11 yrs old and started complaining a few hours ago about feeling pain from her belly button "straight down". I have researched the internet and the closest thing I could find was appendicitis, but she doesn't have any of the other symptoms. When she moves it seems to get worse and she cries. I've had her to stretch out on the couch and that seems to have dulled it somewhat. I'd really be interested to see if anyone has found out any more information.

I am reading this and it is so interesting to see other peoples posts. I have been going through this pain on and off for years. I had a laparoscopy to remove some endometriosis in hopes this would alleviate some of the pain. I am not sure that was the answer as years later on and off still getting it, maybe it would be worse if I didn't?
I also have PCOS and the doctor (fertility) said get use to the pain as I will always have it. It is hard to get use to as it affects my daily life and happiness when it is really bad!
