Herbal Viagra is becoming a popular entity for patients suffering from ED to use as a supplement. The advertisements claim that these products truly work but is the risk to your health truly worth the reward?

Erectile dysfunction is a common disease that can affect a significant portion of the male population. Don't be fooled; this is not a disease exclusively seen in the elderly [1]. Chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes Mellitus and anxiety can all be underlying reasons for why this dysfunction can occur [2]. Viagra is the first-line treatment for these types of conditions, but it comes with its panel of side effects that can make the therapy dangerous [3]. As a result, natural treatments for erectile dysfunction have grown in popularity, and now numerous vitamins and dietary supplements for ED are on the market in an effort to find treatment for erectile dysfunction. In previous articles, we have talked about how natural supplements like DHEA can increase libido in women and help erectile dysfunction in men or L-arginine can be used to help improve erections. In this article, we will take a look at another natural supplement that has been linked to erectile dysfunction and goes by the name of "herbal Viagra." It has the same name of a compound that has an efficacy of nearly 80 percent to treat erections (Viagra) but is a herbal preparation safe or is it a potentially dangerous erectile dysfunction remedy? Does Herbal Viagra Work?

Herbal Viagra is the more popular name for herbal supplement I have already touched on in a previous article, yohimbine, African tree bark to treat erectile dysfunction. It is one of the many plant materials that have sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra in it. We found that it is a supplement that we can consider to help us last longer in bed. This supplement can help stimulate blood flow by dilating blood vessels. The increase in the flow of blood to the penis helps boost erections. It is also able to increase the level of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that helps sustain erections. [5]

In one study to determine if herbal Viagra was effective, researchers gave 29 males with orgasmic dysfunction of different etiologies 20 milligrams of yohimbine and the effects on their erectile potential was measured. At the conclusion of the study, 16 patients were able to achieve an orgasm during sexual intercourse while 3 more needed had a sustained erection but were unable to orgasm without additional stimulation. That result had a success rate of nearly 66 percent of patients. [6] As we can see from this study, herbal Viagra can be an effective supplement to consider when you have erectile dysfunction when it is taken in a known dosage and given as a purified sample

Is it Something that is Safe to Use?

Having a supplement that works is a good start when you are considering what supplements to purchase, but there is another big issue when you are dealing with supplements that you need to be mindful of.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate the purity and ingredients that are commonly found in supplements.

A common misnomer that many people get confused about is what exactly a herbal supplement is. To most, "herbal" represents a natural and therefore, more healthy product compared to the synthetic material that they purchase from a pharmacy. Unfortunately, this incorrect definition is what generate millions of dollars in revenue for this industry. The term "herbal" is a loose distinction that can be applied to any supplement that has some plant material as an ingredient. These compounds may be just unless fillers that can allow these companies to market their product as "natural" at best, but it could also contain active ingredients that can have physiological changes that could send you to the emergency room like sudden loss of blood pressure, tachycardia, headaches and may even cause heart attacks. [7]

In the case of "herbal Viagra," the big risk that patients take in taking this type of supplement is companies are not forced to verify the purity of the ingredients and may not even report it on the labels because of a lack of regulation. This would the equivalent of a customer walking into a restaurant and selecting foods just based on attractive names and without knowing what ingredients are used to make it. Some may be tasty and could be marketed as good for you while others could be potentially toxic. If you don't think this hypothetical scenario would happen to you, just realize you are committing this scenario every time you venture into a fast food restaurant. When patients purchase the ED product, they may be unaware of the ingredients that make up the product and dangerous cross-reactivity with blood pressure medications or antibiotics a patient may already be using could be possible. [8

As a physician, I would strongly recommend for patients to avoid these types of natural treatments for erectile dysfunction. Without proper testing, you are putting yourself in a hazardous situation if you take medications that are untested.

At best, you are paying money for something that may not work but at worst, these compounds may be things that could send you to the emergency room. When considering vitamins and dietary supplements for EDstick to the pure compounds we have discussed like horny goat weed for erectile dysfunction and avoid herbal Viagra  or other compounds that have a list of "active ingredients." It is a truly potentially dangerous erectile dysfunction remedy.
