I've read all of the posts (and this is first time posting) so please know I'm just clarifying something.

13 days since Microdiscectomy on L5-S1.  It was a fairly bad herniation (did not burst).  Surgeon said almost a 9 out of 10 (10 being worse).  Had surgery at Penn in Philaelphia from top surgeon but I'm a little concerned.  My sciatic pain has crept back in and is at a 3-4 most days.  I'm 6' 175lbs so weight is not an issue.  Work out 4-5 days a week (which probably is why I injured myself in first place) for 20 years.  What is the average time felt before the sciatic pain was down to a 1?  Did it slowly get better after a couple of weeks?  I've noticed most people mentioned that between 14-30 days they seemed to find more relief....ANY input is greatly appreciated and Thank You

Hello, soldano21.

My uncle had similar operation few years ago. From his experience, I can say that pain will last for about 20 days. But you can ease it with ice and putting pillows underneath you. Also, try to relax and sleep because your body will recover better that way. Prevent rolling on bed, if you can.

Maybe you can try, in the following days, to walk a little. Just a 100-200 meter to work off the scar tissue. If all is well, you can expect full recovery for about 6 weeks, or so.

Soon you can start with stretches, but estimate by yourself if you're able to. Don't push too much, just be patient.

Hope you will be better soon.

Cheers!

Levar,

Thank You! I was beginning to worry already that this pain is going to be with me for a long time. Will take your advice and God Bless.

I had microdiscectomy 12 days ago. Surgery went fine and there were no complications. However, most people that I talked to before surgery said that the sciatic nerve pain will be gone in a day or so. Well, 12 days later and it hurts just as much as before surgery. Am I being too fast in my recovery time. I know every patient is different but I cant get through the day without pain meds. I don't want to take them anymore but if I don't, I cant function. I've been a mailman for 27 years and I am used to alot of walking. I just want to be pain free and I'm losing patience. Thanks for any replies.
