Same literally I jam the end of the toothpick in between the teeth and it come out on the out side. My gum in between is so weak and worn down its the bottom canine and lateral incisor and I rub my tongue constantly all day from the back or reach my tongue over the row and kinda push my tongue down on the gum and it feels so good it's awful I can't stop and have caused it to recede. It's receded so much I can cause a sucton with my touch and fill the small gap in my gum.

Yes bottom fang to the left and the gum there has receded like crazy. I'm constantly pushing my tongue against the back of the tooth I'll reach around over the top with my tongue and get the front. I have space inbetween the two teeth where the gum is and I kidna suction the inside of my mouth and tongue on it. It feel's so good such a bad habit and I look stupid out in public doing it and that's the worst part about it. I'm so self concious about messing with it but continue to do it because it's so good.

Have you both tried anti allergy tablets could be a allergy that is itching your gums!! Something in the air that could be irritating you!! There's loads of allergy medication take it everyday on a weeks trail and tell me what you guys think good luck

This makes total sense. I've had a cold and allergies. TMI, but I hacking up a lot of mucous yesterday, last night, and the early AM hours. I got up to eat a sandwich and it was so uncomfortable bc I thought something was stuck in my gums which has more space than the other teeth and gum. Anyways, I went to floss and the itch popped up. This happens seldom. I use the floss like it's a saw in between my teeth. I usually end up bleeding without any relief.

That makes sense. Because my itch comes from my nose/upper gum as in the roof of my gum. It's only been recent that iv noticed this so I feel for those who have suffered all their lives. Often I find my nose gets abit bunged up but I know I'm not ill (as in a cold or flu) I have avoided scratching it with sharp objects but rather using a toothbrush head helps. I feel like there is a connection in my upper gym/sinus and nose itching! There must be a cure! It's driving me nuts I'm going to try hay fever medicine because that's the only thing I can think of.

I really need help. I've been doing this since I was 8 and I'm now 22. Mine get so bad that I'm actually taking clumps out if my gums, not just scratching them. Quite a while ago they used to heal, but I'm starting to realise they don't even bleed anymore and I'm very worried that I'm destroying my health. I want to stop but I really can't, every time I go too far I tell myself I have to stop but each time I don't know how. It's so weird and crazy. No idea where it came from or what causes it but surely it has to be somewhat psychological?

Mine don't itch all the time but when they do, it goes together with nails. They itch the same way. Can't figure out the reason. May by there is a lack of some vitamin?

I started effexor about a month ago and now have itchy gums. That's what brought me to this page. Effexor does have the side effect of itching, but it didn't say itchy gums in particular. I'm wondering if it could be this drug.

I have been reading this thread (and others) as a lifeline for several years. My own gums itch exactly how you all describe it. It's almost like an ache, a need to dig deep inside them. I've fantasized about ripping my gums out and finally getting at the center of the pain, and I've shoved everything from fingernails to needles between my teeth for relief, which never comes. My favorite thing was to cut deep into my gums and then hold hot water in my mouth so I could feel this fiery, numbing wave roll through them. I know how unhelpful this advice can seem because I have been given it thousands of times, but I swear to God I spent one week absolutely refusing to "scratch" the itch (sitting on my hands, often, if I had to) and now the itch has reduced 70-80%. I don't think it will ever be gone, but just that short period of not doing it has made my entire life much better. I hope others can find relief as well, and thank you all for your posts, they have made me feel much less alone.

OMG!! I have the same exact problem judging from your description. It started sometime in my 30's and it is only getting worse. Have been to dentists, periodontist, you name it and still no explanation. There is a pulling away of gum tissue on one side of my mouth where the itching and irritation is but no periodontal disease. I'm really starting to think it is systemic whatever it is, since that side of my body seems to exhibit tendinitis and bursitis issues from shoulder, elbow, knee, and down on the ball of my foot and the new finding is a clogged ear. Maybe you are right and it is nerve related or perhaps allergies.

I have had this issue since my childhood, it happens periodically once or twice a year in the same spot. I think when I was a child it was itching in more places, but as I got older it got concentrated in one / two spots. I am surprised I still have some gums left given what I've done to them. I've definitely damaged them to a degree and there is gum recession. When I was a kid and I went to the dentists with my bleeding scratched and injured gums they were amazed at what I've done to them. But they applied some green medicine that colored my tongue and my mouth in green but omg did it work - the itching stopped and the gums healed quickly. I had no idea what this stuff was until recently when I read in some forums and now I am trying to find it and see if it helps - the medicine was produced in Bulgaria, called Granulin or Granuforin (2 sligthly different versions of it) - it was used in dental practices and apparently you can still find it these days. This is my only hope that when I get an itching attack I can get some relief. I am on a mission to find it.

Welcome to my world! I've suffered, and I use that word accurately, from itchy gums for 53 of my 56 years. NO DENTIST I've ever met knows diddly squat about this issue nor cares. Its maddening. Sometimes it goes away for several months but eventually, BAM! it's back! Poking, scratching, and gargling with peroxide help for a while but they are all very temporary fixes. The gums in question are now "notched" and the dental hygienist I tried to explain it to refused to believe the notches were caused by ME SCRATCHING the gums but instead insisted that I was brushing too hard. Simply would not listen. This just seems like a health issue no health professional cares about but if they knew how painful it is, they might.

I’m still at this. I’ve been postin on here for years. I had the fabulous dentist in TX who tried everything but nothing worked. I’ve moved and my new dentist was completely baffled trying to figure this out. She was trying to find the spot and when she finally hit it she said, “That’s bone. That’s how deep it is.” She said for most people that would be excruciatingly painful. For me, it was such relief it made me drool. She was shocked. But says she has absolutely no idea what on earth to do about it.
