Thank you. My daughter has been "weaning" off methadone for the past year. She had a mild addiction to Norco. Her first stint in rehab resulted in a addiction to.another weaning drug. After she lost a very good job in the banking industry,she ended up at the methadone clinic. She is now 7 months pregnant and facing the heartbreaking choice of adoption. She doesn't have to skills nor the money to care for a drug addicted baby. My advise...watch the gut wrenching videos of these babies online. Good luck.

I realize thos is an old thread, but tp anyone reading thos please dont take methadone advice from a general practitioner. Speak to and follow yhe direction of yoir METHADONE DOCTORS and they will refer u to an OB experienced in this. Many general practicioner treat methadone as they would any other drug but it is absolutely NOT tge same at all. Any withdrawal in first trimester can cause iscarriage. Any withdrawal in last trimester can cause early Labour and therefor a premature and under developed babt. Methadone itself does NOT affect baby's development. Yet she may exprirence mild eithdrawls symptoms when born but that is much much better than being born pre term! I know its a horrible situation but please do VERY EXTENSIVE research and consult with multiple methadone specialists before detoxing while pregnant.

Totally agree..wqs told to stay on it eveeything will be done they said ..well yes baby is super healthy but not having my child at home for almost 2 months watching her withdrawal was the most horrific thing I've ever experienced and the rude judgmental nursing staff just made it sooo much worse. I took it for years due to chronic pain prescribed by my doctor.

I'm just curious where u live that they let the baby withdraw at home? Mine stayed for 2 months in the hospital... very horrible Drs and nurses they thought I was the worse parent even though every Dr said to stay on it.... horrible

hi im been on methadone for a long time and i have never heard of having to take it 6 times through out the day everyone i have ever seen that takes methadone take i once daily at the pharmacy or is on carries at home and it one bottle for the day average starting from 40 and up for does for the day i am on methadone right now while pregnant and i have carries i take 80 mls in one bottle first thing in the morning and i was told not to go down or tapper off because the baby takes some of that methadone you get daily and if you do go down to quickly you are taking from the baby and could make withdrawal for both of you where u end up relapsing

Hello I was wondering if anyone out there has gotten pregnant while tapering off methodone ? And if anybody did,did you start getting withdrawals when u got pregnat? I been tapering 20 mg a month or 10 every 2 weeks I been on 150 for a week and was fine but the 2nd week I'm having hot flashes cold sweats chills and other wd symptoms if anyone can answer me I would greatly appreciate it. Please do not stress about being on 40mg of methadone while pregnant. Most people are uneducated and will give you advice based on horror stories they have heard or false information they think is correct. I had my 2nd son while on a low dose of methadone and he was perfectly healthy!! No withdrawl what so ever. However everyone is different and the NICU dr. Told me that babies sometimes withdrawl when mom is on 60mg but some dont when mom is on 130mg it depends. Also breastfeeding helps immensely bc of the skin to skin contact not bc they get trace amounts of methadone.thats bs said the dr as well. Do what you feel comfortable with and what's best for baby. Don't risk loosing your baby and wean afterwards. Good luck and !!!

All the research I've read says if your going to taper to do it slowly and in the 2nd trimester only! Personally i would wait till the 2nd trimester and wean to 30-40mg bc most hospitals have a cut off usually around 50mg where the baby doesn't need to be in the NICU after birth. Good luck!

Wow. Just wow!!!! You are completely ignorant and judgmental! Claim to love? I am 7 weeks and tapering I thought of abortion but I already LOVE my baby! You're sick. OBVIOUSLY most of us on methadone don't want to get pregnant....things happen. I'm so glad you don't "open your legs" while ur on methadone and honestly hope even when ur off keep them closed cuz ur sh*t attitude doesn't need to be reproduced.

Also people with an uid have gotten pregnant so you really are so ignorant. Lol I had ***protected****sex and here I am. I've been on methadone for 3 years and have been tapering for months. I am under 100mg now and found out I'm pregnant. We used for 5 years and had unprotected sex the whole time never got pregnant, it was stupid. Thankfully we didnt. But now we use condoms and aren't on heroin and we got pregnant. It's fine you're pro choice but don't come on here bashing people for having a baby, accident or not, when they're bettering their life (most of them)

Do you really think a methadone baby stays addicted? I mean what are u saying skills nor money to care for a drug addicted baby. OBVIOUSLY IT'S HEARTBREAKING but damn you must be one supportive mom of ur daughter who's going to the methadone clinic and teying to get better....im sure you're tired and have dealt with alot of her sh*t but u could be a little supportive since u said urself she's on methadone. At least she's not using anymore.
