Hi, My son is almost two years old. He is very smart, and still contiues to amaze me everyday. But since he was about 9 months old, he has rocked himself to sleep. He sits in his crib, rocking inside of it. But lately it has gotten alot worse. He bashes his head off the crib for about an hour everynight now, so he has a bald spot on the back of his head which looks horrible. And it always seems like a bump there now. I took him to my doctor and she said "its just the way he comforts himself before he sleeps, and he will grow out of it". But that really didnt help me. I made an appointment with a specialiest but it is not till next week. Does anyone have any advice, or anything?

My 2 year old - whom is now 14 - would bang his head on the corner of a wall, on a floor, on a door etc!!!! EVERY picture we have of him around 2 years old was of him with a black bruise! IT was AWFUL! I would just sit there in despair and cry! My EX pediatrictian said to me "You need to watch "Ready Set Breathe!" I was like o.O :'( :-S :-( I couldn't believe the lack of help that was available for something so DEVESTATING to watch and to be stared at for the "questionabl bruises!!!!"
Then I went to my present pediatrician and what she told me is this "IF he hurt himself he would stop doing it, and the ONLY time to worry i IF there isn't a lump from a bad hit" As if you are expecting a bump and none appear - that means there is swelling inside! So low and behold one day he did it too hard on the table and it made him have a little convulsion, we rushed him to the hospital and he NEVER did it again!
I also think that along being a "terrible two" he was also behind - due to being VERY ill when he was born - and coldn't speak very well! How is your sons speech? And does he interact well with you and to surroundings etc.?

my sons speech is fine, he says everything he is supposed to at this age and is very aware of his surroundings. He interacts with everything and seems to be your normal two year old. He only does it in his crib. But i just want it to stop. I feel so helpless and i really dont know what to do anymore. His back of his head has no hair, and there is a lump, which doesnt seem to cause him pain but it seems swollen. Even tonight when i put him to bed he rocked for about 45 mins till he fell asleep.

I'm glad to hear about his development - my son was investigated for Autism!!! So I was just questioning this!
The bump is a GOOD thing - I know that sounds silly - but like I said IF there wasn't a bump when there was supposed to be one THAT is a big problem!
Have you ever heard of "A mothers sway"? We rock our babies to sleep, we rock them to soothe them and we can be standing at an elevator - with no baby - and there goes that swaying/rocking! EVERY mother does it, and you can tell a MILE away who has a child from that sway! Do you know why we do it? It is soothing! When a baby is in the womb - surrounded by liquid - they are swayed ALL day long! And thus find it comforting outside the womb! And we do it too - just like sittin on a porch swing rocking back and forth - or in a rocking chair, etc etc etc! Just think how many times you have rocked him AND yourself! Probably ALL the time - it just comes natural! So this is his way of rocking himself to sleep! So I TOTALLY get your worry - believe me I DO - BUT he is just soothing himself that is all! He is active, on par with other children, bright, etc. So don't worry OK? As long as there is no deterioation in his development then he will be fine! and IF he hurts himself he WILL stop! Just like my son did! I hope this helps you to put your mind at ease! You are doing everything right! Good luck and health honey![/list]
