I was having issues for about a year. Then they became every Fri when I'd meet my sister. I assumed someone was putting something in my food or drink at home.
I end up going to the doc and turning in samples. They found nothing. I was past 50, so I set up my colonoscopy. I told the husband that the doc told me to go right to the hospital and have them do a full panel of toxins, and they'd surely find it.
I don't know if I was unknowingly ingesting something, or if the full clean out required before colonoscopy cleared some pest from inside me, but I haven't had a problem since.

Did you find out what the issue is? The diarrea could be due to the smoking. Or you could have colitis.
Did you get looked at for gout? The finger swekling could be something like that. The n again it could also be related to an immu e response.
Were you tested for lyme disease and celiac?
I had 3 years of painful joint swelling (but episodes lasted days, rather than weeks) after receiving a booster shot for rubella. I guess it was an immune reaction, and they can last for years. But at the time I had xrays and bloodwork and they could not find anything wrong. I found out on the CDC website years later that it is a known reaction to that particular vaccine. I guess some immune reactions just don't show on tests and can last for years. It did go away though! I was 21 and it was gone by the time I was 24.
I have had chronic daily diarrhea for a year now ever since an antibiotic I was put on for IBS. Well I did not have diarrhea like this with IBS. I had mild constipation and bloating, sometimes there was a runny stool or sometimes I just had to go 4 times daily. But this is different than ibs! I have to use the bathroom all the time!! And it is almost always liquid! Anyway other than low potassium (lost from always going to the toilet) which makes me absolutely miserable and exhausted, they cant find anything. I am on a wait list for a gastroenterolist, but living in Canada i probably have a year or two or more on that waitlist before I see one. Waitlists here for specialists can be 3 years or so, but that was before covid so maybe longer now. What I suspect for now is microscopic colitis, but that will have to be tested with a biopsy. Now I am dealing with daily heart palpitations as well due to electrolyte issues. Waiting on Ekg and chest xray.I also started getting migraines because of it.
Chronic diarrhea is no joke!
