like the chick up there said... if you are ignorant to the FACTS then DON'T comment !!!
the REASON "I" was told NOT TO QUIT METHADONE is cuz i would kill my baby !!!
so that's when i made the choice as a mother, to KEEP my child & not let me SICK & SELFISH needs take over !
people make me soooo damn sick ! im 22 weeks pregnant & my little girl is fine thus far !
shes ALWAYS moving & kicking ! i felt bad when i got preg, & believe me... i wanted to "just quit"
but it isn't that easy ! it wouldn't be that easy to get off if i wasn't pregnant ! so don't judge people until you have been there !
& by choosing to stay on my methadone, my child's LIFE cam first !

*****sorrryyyy ! that just really pissed me off ********

you most certainly can breastfeed a baby born on methadone. my son was born on methadone and I did. I was actually encouraged to do so. it does help the withdrawals and its such a small amnt, it dsnt make them withdraw longer. I thought the same thing and thought he would be sick longer but that's just no the case.

if u get off methadone while pregnant, you can kill the baby. my son was born on methadone and hes perfectly healthy. y kill a baby because there gonna be sick for a short time? that's selfish.

you are uneducated! If a mother quits methadone or any other opiate cold turkey while pregnant it can certainly cause problems and even death in a developing baby! Not to mention the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are when all the major functioning organs are developing, so what in the world makes you think putting a fetus thru the horrible detox process in these crucial weeks would do anything positive for the baby?? Methadone, when taken as perscribed by your dr. while pregnant...mind you while staying clean from all other substances is the safest treatment for a pregnant mother and her developing baby! So you need to get your facts straight!! I was on 80 MG with my daughter thru my whole pregnancy and she was born healthy I was advised it BEST to breastfeed her!!! In which I did and she had ZERO withdrawl symptoms! I am currently on 80 MG still a year and a half later...my daughter who is sitting right here next to me playing happily and healthy is living proof that METHADONE is the BEST treatment you can give to your baby while pregnant and currently addicted to opiates...Oh, and I am also 8 months pregnant with my 4th child, 2nd daughter and 2nd time one methadone while pregnant..I actually have been in treatment since I found out I was pregnant with my last daughter 2 years ago...and I am proud to be the parent today I have always yearned to be years before...I am sorry to say without methadone I would probably be buried in my addiction to opiates right now living unmarried without my children...but I am so PROUD to say I have all four of my children always have and always will because I am in treatment and responding well...I have never failed any of my drug screens at the clinic and I never will because METHADONE is my only hope to staying clean! I have no care as to who disagrees! You make your own choices and I'll make mine! I know my daughter is in perfect health...and before I was pregnant for her I was actually pregnant and I did choose to go cold turkey and guess what..at 6 months pregnant I found out my son had a heart condition and we ended up losing him ...What I believe cause his death. was my decision to quit opiates cold turkey when I found out i was pregnant for him ...Although there is no positive link nor is there evidence to rule out the heart condition was cause by my using before I knew i was pregnant nor is there proof that the abrupt stopping of my use of opiates cause his heart condition, but I truly feel by me going thru detox when I was pregnant had everything to do with it..I will never be able to say for sure but if you want my personal feelings??????I know in my heart his heart deformity which happened at 8 wks gestation WHEN I WAS DETOXING was from the actual detox....I spiraled down hill even worse than ever after losing him and when I became pregnant for my daughter 6 months later I decided to get on methadone right away and she is sitting her laughing healthy and playing with her toys and I believe my choice to be on methadone was the RIGHT choice...I just wanted to share for all you new mommies out there who are struggling with addiction and have newly found out you're expecting...if you're serious about treatment then do it...there are plenty mothers who are past pregnant methadone mothers and there are currently pregnant mothers who are pregnant in my clininc I am actually a past pregnant mother on methadone and i am currently pregnant and still on methadone and i will be breastfeeeding my daughter just as i did last year with my other daughter upon the adice of my OBGYN my Specialist OB and alll the NICU Dr.'s who took care of my daughter while she stayed ...NOTE my daughter was 6 weeks early and she had to learn to suckle and that is the only reason for her stay in the NICU was due to her being so early...YES SHE WAS EARLY BUT SO WERE MY TWO PREVIOUS PREGNANCIES WHOM WERE MY SONS AND THEY WERE NOT METHADONE BABIES!! SO BEFORE YOU SAY METHADONE WAS THE REASON MY DAUGHTER WAS EARLY LET ME JUST THROW THAT IN!!!

CONGRATS TO ALL THE MOMMIES ON METHADONE! IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING WITH A DECISION PLEASE DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR BABY AND STOP USING AND GET INTO A METHADONE CLINIC AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF AND YOUR BABY!!

I'm sorry but i don't agree with you at all. If you were on methadone and you didn't use protection and got pregnant you are a terrible person. Why would you risk putting a child through something like that. You knew you were on it and still got pregnant. you obviously don't care at all about that child. How can you condone drugging a child to not feel withdraw symptoms a child never asked for? foolish! And about research why don't you research contraceptive protection and forget condoning your sick behavior. I too am on methadone and it makes me sick to see these pregnant women in there! I'm a fool for using but thats my choice, I would never want a child to feel drug sickness like I have. Most mothers take their child home and love them and don't watch them suffer their first months through drug detox. Shame on you and "MOTHERS" like you.

You need to grow up. Who's to say she didn't use protection? I was on methadone and CLEAN on birth control. Had antibiotics prescribed to me and got pregnant. Just because you have an opinion on it doesn't mean its correct OR that you have a right to pass judgement.

Are you that ignorant? If a pregnant woman is on methadone and stops taking it the baby is almost guaranteed to die because when the mother gos through withdrawal so does the baby! The babies body and organs can't take it and start to shut down, and think about it the mother would be so sick that she would not be able to keep much food down so then the baby wouldn't be getting the nutrients he or she needs! Anyways in the future maybe u should think about commenting on things u actually know about!

I am 8 months pregnant on 90 mgs of methadone. The ob gyn practice I'm attending specialize and deliver babies born on methadone and the doctor has already advised me to breastfeed to help prevent and treat withdrawals. They also warned me of the consequences of detoxing during pregnancy and advised me not to do so.

YOU ARE SO IGNORANT! Imon methadone and 5 months pregnant! My first thought was omg im goiing to have to detox, I was terrified and saw the methadone DR. the day after I found out! Keep in mind ive been on methadone for over a year and I DO NOT USE ANY OTHER DRUG OR DRINK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! I have my life together, own a home and am a fine member of society.. You are a fool. YOU NEED TO SPEAK WITH A DR. before you going making judements! If I would have detoxed out while pregnant I more than likely wouldnt have had a baby! I already had a regular period my entire pregnany so far and have alot of other issues.. NOT because of the methadone because Ive had another child while I wasnt on methadone and had the SAAAMEEE issues! IT WOULD HAVE HURT THE BABY MORE AND MYSELF BUT, MAINLY THE BABY if I would have detoxed before baby!!!! You are a m***n, you just had noidea!!!!!

YOU are discusting! OBVIOUSLY none of us intentionally got pregnant! BUT, now that we are YOU are a nasty person for basically telling us that we should kill our childe instead of putting them through a week of pain!? They are just starting to form when you first find out if you were to detox then they either A. more than likely die, or B. Have abnormalities there whole life. IT IS A crucial time the first 12 weeks in the wound. You are biggest shitbag and discusting person I have ever witnessed. You clearly have no brain,.. You are more than likely still a junkie with no life which is why you assume everyone else on methadone is! But, honey, I have 2 jobs, go to UNH, own a home, have a husband thats never used a drug in his entire life and a brand car. NOT ALL of us are s**m some of us learn from our mistakes and pick up the pieces faster. then theres you. GET A LIFE, go to school, see a DR. do something because you are A TWIT! ;*

I am the mother of a 9 yr old daughter born on methadone... I am still on methadone... she was successfully taken off of methadone after 21 days. The ONLY symptom that I've found that every methadone baby that I've ever encountered is they seem to all suffer from full body "twitches" or small convulsions. They last no longer than a few months after being taken methadone and to be perfectly honest babies are extremely resilient to the withdrawals of methadone... the things you have to look at: #1. Was the baby put on methadone after birth? (As mine was for 21 days at 0.12mgs every 6 hrs then cut in half to 0.06 mgs) #2. How high was mom's dosage? Oddly I have noticed that the lower the dosage, the worse the withdrawal. I have no idea why this is but it's simply an observation in speaking with other parents of methadone babies. . How to determine if the baby is in actual withdrawal or is just a fussy baby? Go by this in 2 ways... the average adult taken off of methadone cold turkey has withdrawal for no less than THREE MONTHS. There is also a checklist that doctors and nurses go by & they will provide it to you to determine yourself whether or not the baby is actually in withdrawal or not. Good luck to you.

Everyone is not the same...just because it affected you one way doesn't mean it affects us all that way! I've been on Methadone Maintenance for 20+ yrs, I've had 2 kids while I was on Methadone also and neither of them had withdrawals..and FYI: after being on Methadone for so line it does tend to cause some people to not "feel", mentally, emotionally & spiritually! So just b/c it doesn't do that to you doesn't mean anyone is full of c**p b/c it most definitely can...I'm living proof of it...so before being so quick to condemn others for how they say Methadone makes them feel, get your facts straight first!!!!

My little grandson was born to a methadone user. He seems to be going ok, except he continues to sneeze and cough. Is this a withdrawal sign, and if so how long does this last?
