Hi,
About 2 months ago a friends and I committed to get in shape and run our first 5k. In high school I was (not a runner) but very athletic but 30+ years later I find myself out of shape. I've been walking but as I said for the last 2 months have been doing the couch to 5K program. We are up to running 20 minutes.

The problem - muscle soreness from just below the knee down to my feet. It is present whether I am running or not. I am committed to this as it has improved my spirits, my stamina, and my health (except for the killer soreness mostly on the outsides of my shins). I know that I am overweight and have fibromyalgia but please don't tell me I should quit running. I find that I love to run. I am praying someone can tell me how to overcome this.

It sounds like you have a case of shin splints.

There are a few things that you can try:

1) Keep your weekly mileage constant and ice after every run that you go on. In time as your body gets used to the mileage and the splints diminish you can slowly increase your distances.

2) Investing in a decent pair of cushioned trainers is essential. Make sure you go to a specialist running store where they can asses your running gait (foot fall) and advise you on the correct pair of running shoes. Not all running shoes are the same and it is vital that you make sure you buy the pair that is correct for you.

3) Run on grass and soft surfaces whenever possible

4) If none of the above work then you can always see a physio or doctor who might advice that you buy a pair of custom shoe inserts.
