Hi, I'm 54 years old and few days ago I got this strange pimple like formation on my lower lip, it didn’t hurt a bit so I thought it was nothing serious. I tried squeezing it out to see if any pus would come out thinking it was just another common pimple. There was no pus at all and I was able to take the pimple off. The next day the place where the pimple was there was a great red spot and my entire lip was swollen and painful. What should I do about this and could this be anything serious?

There are few possible causes of your swollen lip, the first one might be the infection of the pimple you took off which caused the lip to swell. The infection has probably spread to the lip causing the reaction of the organism – the swelling. If that’s the case then a simple antibiotic therapy prescribed, of course by your doctor would be enough to cure the swelling. The second cause might be an allergic reaction to some substance you are taking orally, maybe even on the lipstick, the pimple might have been just a manifestation of the allergy, by hurting it you caused the reaction which only worsened the situation. You should try to find the allergen and try to limit its use and contact with your body, you could also have your doctor prescribe you some anti inflammatory medications to control the swelling. The third option might be the bite of an insect like an ant or a spider or some other that you might have not been aware of, the pimple was an entry wound and hurting it only worsened the infection and inflammation. In that case you should immediately talk to your doctor about that since it can be life threatening if there is a strong allergic reaction to the bite of the insect.
