Hi, I am a 38 years old woman, and the left side of my abdomen is swollen with dull pain. I have no idea what could be the cause. My blood and urine results are normal, but I still feel the pressure on that area. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi, couple of months ago I had the same problem. A left side of my abdomen was more sensitive then swollen, and every pressure was painful. I did all kinds of tests, but a doctor just couldn’t diagnose me. Finally, he sent me to colonoscopy, and I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. It was causing the dull pain in my lower left abdomen, and I finally knew what was wrong with me. You should also have a colonoscopy, just in case. I found out later that there were some other possible causes for left abdominal pain, such as Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Even ovaries can cause the pain in lower abdomen, but I don’t think that you have this problem because your pain is dull, and ovaries inflammation causes very sharp pain.

I also use to have pain in side to pelvic region. this was sometimes a dull pain or even a pressure like feeling when i sat down. intercourse could be painful. before menstruation one side at my ovaries would be sore and sometimes i would have pain radiating to my back. After 3 ultersounds, alot of pain and 3 years later it finally landed me in the hospital. i was first told classic signs of kidney stones but this could not be confirmed with xrays. 6 months later i was back in the hosptial and told the same thing and if i had any more problems to come back. i refused to leave so they did a cat scan. I then was admitted to the hospital becasue i had a tumor. the tumor was wrapped around my ovaries. Needless to say, i had to have a full hysterectomy at age 31. luckliy the tumor was benign. be proactive for your own health, you know better than the doctors when something "isnt right". The uncologist told me, he was glad i was perstiant with not leaving with the er doctor because i had a septic infection spreading in my body and would have died in 2 days if i went home like the er doctor wanted me to. this isnt to scare you, only to educate you that if your having pain; get it checked out. keep getting in checked out until they find the root of your pain. Good luck!

hello,

I am 25 and have been having abdominal pain for the last year and none of my doctors know what is wrong i keep going back to see them and they only change the meds that they give me. when this pain first started it was a dull pain at my waistline with a few sharp pains that would come and go then it moved to right under my rib cage. Now the pain gets so bad that I feel as if I can not even bend and put a little pressure on this area. The other day I went back to my primary doctor and she felt my stomach and noticed that there was a mass about 2" wide just under my last rib. I feel as if the doctors do not know how to handle abdominalpains in women.

I am 27, female. Got of pill this year (6 months ago) since my husband and I wanted to start trying for children. About 6 weeks ago, I started having pain mainly on my left side of abdomin (near ovary), all around my hip, and lower back. It hurts to sit down, walk fast, if someone tapped me on my side, speed bumps, etc. It seems my pain is worse during the week of ovulation and period, but I have had not had one day of no pain since it started. I have seen my gyno twice, primary once, and urologist once...had an ultra sound, catscan, etc but no one can find anything yet and not one seems sure who I should see next. Its so fustrating b/c I want an answer and I want it fixed so I can move on with my life (and get pregnant!). Of course my worse fear is it is something related to infertility, but I try to not think about that. Anyone have any suggestions for me? I know something is wrong and do not want to have to live like this!

I am 22, and for a few years now I have been having these same sort of pains in my lower left side. I went for tests and my Dr told me that I have IBRC ( Irritable bowl.. the constipated one) I thought ok makes sense, but these pains just kept getting worse and worse. About 1-2 weeks before my period comes they get even worse, and they are getting to the point that I can hardly stand. I have had ultra sounds, but nothing has shown.. What should I do??

I had very similar issues for a few days. It started with a UTI and then a week later my left lower abdomen hurt by the left hip. The next day my right side was sensitive, everytime I stepped with my right foot it sent pressure into my lower right side! A day later it migrated back to my left side and stayed there for a few days. I went to my OB/GYN to get checked out and was clear PID, UTI and sexually transmitted diseases. I went to my primary, he pressed on my stomach a few time, asked me if I could be ovulating (I felt dumb--it IS possible based on the time of month) and sent me to the drug store to buy Gas-X. I have been instructed to take in 3 times a day. After the first hour...and some embarassing gas...I feel 1000 times better.

Yes, I had gas when I didn't eat high fiber foods, I had gas and burping on an empty stomach.

My doctor wants to see me in a few weeks to see how I'm doing on the Gas-X and eliminate any other issues, but I wanted to share in case someone else wants to try Gas-X (or something similar that contains the same dugs) to see if that helps.

The doctor said it was trapped gas...and the Gas-X would help break up the bubbles.

I would still recommend visiting your doctor, but the Gas-X might help while you're waiting to see your doctor.

:( HI, I have the same thing! I have had what feels like ovary pains on my left side fopr over 7 months. It gets worse when sitting and can spread to my back, hips or buttock. I've had stomach and uterine ultra-sounds, blood tests, colonoscopy and lower lumbar MRI. Nothing found.I am very gasy and have bouts of diarihea from time to time. I am also very bloated and have gained about 10 pounds within a year.I'm depressed from feeling this way, especially when every doctor tells me I'm so healthy. I was told it couls be IBS but I have to regulate my diet and no meds can help. It's super depressing! Wish you luck, lets hope it gets better.

I too have had a pain in the lower left side for years. I suppose it got worse over time but was not constant. Only when I stood up quickly was when I noticed it. Then recently, past year, I felt IT when my bowels were moving. It was a sharp pain when passing that side. Then within the past 7 months during intercourse in certain positions. So finally told the Doc, she felt the mass, did the sonogram and now scheduled for obgyn oncologist surgery this month to have it removed. Its a solid complex lesion 7cm on or in the left ovary. So ladies, please do not ignore your symptoms as we always seem to do. Sometimes the radiologists are not the best so go to another location OR have them re read by another. Good luck to you all

I have had the same exact pain in the lower left side for over a year. 2 CT scans, MRI, Colonoscopy, Ultrasounds...nothing shows up. Pain is up around hip and down to pelvic. Not constant. And seems to travel in this area. And very gassy! Misdiagnosed with hernia, as well. At same time pain started, I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure. I'm beginning to think it is somewhat related to ovulation. Would love to have a definite answer but seems to be improbable. Good to know others are experiencing this mystery, though!

What are endometriosis symptoms?

Most women who have endometriosis, in fact, do not have symptoms. Of those who do experience symptoms, the common symptoms are pain (usually pelvic) and infertility. Pelvic pain usually occurs during or just before menstruation and lessens after menstruation. Some women experience pain or cramping with intercourse, bowel movements and/or urination. Even pelvic examination by a doctor can be painful. The pain intensity can change from month to month, and vary greatly among women. Some women experience progressive worsening of symptoms, while others can have resolution of pain without treatment.

Pelvic pain in women with endometriosis depends partly on where the implants of endometriosis are located. Deeper implants and implants in areas with many pain-sensing nerves may be more likely to produce pain. The implants may produce substances that circulate in the bloodstream and cause pain. Lastly, pain can result when endometriosis implants form scars. There is no relationship between severity of pain and how widespread the endometriosis is (the "stage" of endometriosis).

Endometriosis can be one of the reasons for infertility in otherwise healthy couples. When laparoscopic examinations are performed for infertility evaluations, endometrial implants can be found in some of these patients, many of whom may not have painful symptoms of endometriosis. The reasons for a decrease in fertility are not completely understood, but might be due to both anatomic and hormonal factors. The presence of endometriosis may involve masses of tissue or scarring (adhesions) within the pelvis that may distort normal anatomical structures, such as Fallopian tubes, which transport the eggs from the ovaries. Alternatively, endometriosis may affect fertility through the production of hormones and other substances that have a negative effect on ovulation, fertilization of the egg, and/or implantation of the embryo.

Other symptoms related to endometriosis include lower abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, low back pain, irregular or heavy menstrual bleeding, or even blood in the urine. Rare symptoms of endometriosis include chest pain or coughing blood due to endometriosis in the lungs, headache and/or seizures due to endometriosis in the brain.
