Hi;
My man has diverticulosis for about 10 years...up to last couple years, he could handle the pain/diet restriction/etc. However, attacks came & went & were more bearable. For the past 4-6 months, he's had problems with highly abnormal amount of bowel movements (like 20 + times/day), with severe weakness to make it in time to the washroom when sudden urges come on to his tummy. He says it's like he can feel something just about 1 inch from his anus ready to come out all the time. He has occasional accidents over this. He is 66 yrs. old, smokes, drinks coffee & beer. His prostate (enlarged) so they tell him has been treated with antibiotics for the last 3 + months, however, he's struggling with urgencies of voiding at that end as well, with penis head very sensitive/sore, dry ejaculation & sore testes intermittently. And yes, he has masturbated much over the years & has been a great lover, however, in last few years, his penis won't get hard, it's more on the semi-soft side. He has cholesterol & his B/pressure is on the high side. Can you please help, so he can have some comfort & more of a comfortable social life, especially with the bowel urgencies...seems like weakening muscles of that area...what could help? Could Kegel exercises help or what else? Thx much in advance.

Considering your husband’s age I think these side effects were normal. (enlarged prostate, soft erections, and everything that goes along with it).

AS for the fecal inconsistence, I think you need doctor’s help for that one. What controls our bowel movements is brain, pelvic muscles that pass around the
rectum and anus and nerve connections between brain and pelvic muscles that control the opening and shutting of the anus. Fecal incontinence happens when one of these elements get damaged. The probable reason is weakening of the muscles that comes along with aging but if your husband had any spinal injuries, he may suffer from nerve damage, etc
If he had problems with constipation over the years, his muscles could have damaged that way as well. When waste is not expelled regularly, it could build up, water is absorbed from the waste by the rectum, and waste becomes very hard. It can’t be expelled by muscle contractions, it builds up, irritates rectum lining, waste is broken down by bacteria into liquid that smells really bad and it just leaks from the anus.

There are techniques nowadays that can repair this problem, so that your husband could lead a normal life.

Until then, you should use proper incontinence-care products like disposable pads, garments and bed and chair protectors, make him maintain good hygiene, washing and changing the pads regularly.
