I had my tonsills taken out on 3/10/11.I am 44 yrs. old, and I have sleep apnea.I had my tonsills removed, and I also had my uvula trimmed shorter and the area around my uvula trimmed also. Its been 17 days since my operation.I had thrush and took anti biotics to get rid of it.Now I don`t have any taste.Ican`t taste anything. Will my taste return or will it remain the same(no taste)? Is this common or is my sense of taste going to return?

Hi Jquiria,

Can I ask you why did you get your uvula trimmed? Is there some problem with it or there is another reason?

It is not uncommon after the tonsillectomy that patient loses his taste in mouth. It usually comes back after some time. You have to go through the process of healing after the surgery. It can last up to 4 weeks. Anything after this means that something is not good with the surgery. You have to have a lot of fluids and in first week or two, it is advised to have a soft diet (some call it a soup diet).

I think that sleep apnea should not affect this at all so you should worry about this.

How is everything now? I am set to have my Tonsils and Uvula removed on Tuesday and I am wondering whether or not the Uvula needs to be removed as it is not that large. My tonsils are really big and almost touch so that is not a question. My sleep apnea score was a 29 and I am 47 years old.
