Hi, I had kidney cancer removed few weeks ago. A doctor prescribed me Alpha interferon (Intron), and told me to use it three times a week. I still don’t know how does this drug work. Can someone please explain me?

Hi, I used Alpha interferon (Intron) when I had malignant melanoma removed. Interferon is man-made copy of substance that already exist in our bodies. It is made by white blood cells, for fighting infections and cancers. I was receiving it subcutaneously by injections, every single day. My husband learned how to give the injections, so I did it at home. I have some side effects, but they’re not serious. In fact, they are very common. I have fatigue, chill and occasional headaches. Alpha interferon works directly on cancer cells by changing their growth, but it can also encourage them to put out chemicals that will be easily found by immune system cells.
