Hi,a couple of months ago I was clinically diagnosed with depression.Although it's a relief to finally be diagnosed because now I can be treated,I feel a little insulted because I've been telling my doctors this for years!my gp agrees I need antidepressants but she isn't "qualified" to prescribe them because I'm just under 18 and still therefore technically a minor so she says she will refer me to a psychaiatrist and ask them to do it.She will also give me therapy but after seven different counsellors in three years (one of which tried to put me in a mental hospital) I'm not getting my hopes up.I have a feeling it is going to take a long time to get anything done through my gp(I lost faith in doctors a long time ago),so I figured :if you want a job done right,do it yourself!
I've joined a gym and recently adopted two kittens which keeps me distracted but any tips on how to best this would be great.the weirder ,the better!
Thanks
Hi,
There really is no point in taking it out on your gp – even if she did give you prescription, there are good chances that she wouldn’t “guess” the right type of antidepressant, right dosage and many other things that psychiatrist spent years and years learning about. I know that it’s worse to get the wrong treatment and be disappointed because it doesn’t work. But, why do you have to wait this long to get from gp to the psychiatrist? And yes, alternative treatments. Well, gym is good idea, that should definitely work. Maybe you should add some vitamins and minerals to your diet while you’re at it. It’s hard to say what would help you without knowing more about what you’re interested in.
