It has been over five years since I wrote the post about my lifetime of biting the interior of my mouth and my concern re: the daughter who smokes. Thankfully, she stopped smoking more than a year ago (she slowly cut down until she had no more cravings; she also quit her high-stress job). Interestingly, though quitting cigarettes was easy for her, to stop chewing is so hard.
Don't worry about the visual--we've all been there. My concern for you is ice-chewing. Trust me, teeth don't take kindly to that kind of torture. Another danger for teeth is body jewelry in the mouth, which wears down the gums and creates permanent damage. It's a Catch-22: chewing ice relieves your mouth chewing, but creates its own problem. I had written about my use of a mouth guard, provided by a TMJD specialist. I wonder if that is the only way to truly stop. At least, my teeth are protected while using it. I notice that fewer people are posting on this site. Are there fewer of us or have some given up finding a solution?
