I was diagnosed high blood pressure 3 years ago. I’m 52 now. I started my therapy with beta blocker atenolol, and used only that drug. Lately I was suggested to switch on avalide because of certain complications. Please tell me more about avalide. I think that it is a combination of several drugs. Why is multi drug therapy needed in hbp? Thanks.

Avalide is combination of irbesartan and hydrochlor thiazide. Irbesartan is ACEI drug that controls blood pressure. Thiazides are diuretics, which remove excess fluid from the body and lower blood pressure that way. Blood pressure can not be cured; it just has to be controlled with proper medication or with combination of medications. I’ve been on avalide for last 4 years. It has several side effects, and you should be sure to take enough fluids because of its diuretic effect.
