I am contemplating surgery for removal of a bunion and hammertoe on my left foot. I would like a description of the procedure and the level of pain and time of recovery.

Hi! I found that there are several types of bunion surgery, depending upon the extent of the deformity. Most commonly, the surgery involves breaking the toe bone and correcting its alignment. The surgeon also will tighten stretched ligaments on the outside of the toe and release ligaments on the inside of the toe so the tension in the ligaments points the toe in the proper direction. The repositioned bone is stabilized with a screw, plate, or pins. :-(
