And I'm wondering why I feel nauseous after a few glasses of wine. I feel like I'm going to puke tonight. I'm so sorry for your wife.

Did you guys ever find out what was wrong?
I am experiencing the exact same symptoms as your wife. I can have an alcoholic beverage during the day and be okay for the rest of the day/evening, but an hour or two into my sleep I will wake up running to the restroom. It's a very painful experience. Very similar symptoms to the stomach flu- worse in my opinion.

Hi Roger,
I suffer from the same awful symptoms as your wife. I have learned that there is such a thing as "alcohol intolerance", which include symptoms that you described. According to the Mayo clinic, people with alcohol intolerance do not have the enzymes required to breakdown alcohol. As a result, only a few drinks have the ability to cause horrible reactions such as vomiting.
Unfortunately, the only thing they recommend is not drinking alcohol. I do not drink often or a lot when I do, but I still get the effects. I know people as quick to recommend not drinking, but it can be easier said than done in a society that intertwines social occasions and alcohol. The only thing that has worked for me is not drinking more that ONE drink and having LOTS and LOTS of water before.
It's a crummy situation to accept, but the consequences are even worse.

Exact same thing happens to me, without the vomiting. I am a social drinker and have never had any issue until about a year ago. Now if I have one or two, I am perfectly fine. If I have three I am doomed. Doctors are baffled. Have you learned anymore?

I have the same issue and have had this issue for about 5 years now. It doesn't happen every time I drink. I am not diabetic, although I have a son who is type 1. I don't think birth control has anything to do with it because it has happened when I'm off birth control as well. I am in my late 40's. It seems to happen more when I drink white wine than anything. I sure hope someone can help as I too have had tests and everything comes back fine. I do find that if I take a Pepcid when I start to drink it tends to help.

I too recently started suffering from all the same syptoms mentioned. At first it was a few drinks that would trigger these reactions. So I have stayed away from alcohol! This past weekend I completed a half marathon so to celebrate with family I had a bloody Mary with lunch. Later in the afternoon at a bday party I had half a beer. Sure enough, around 8pm I started getting very nauseous, then the shakes and going to the bathroom started. Like a click it lasted 2 hours and subsided! Has anyone had any luck with what this is? I'm not a big drinker by any means but an occasional glass of wine or beer! I would be sad to think I can NEVER have one again!

I can normally have several drinks Inc vodka or southern comfort and not get a hangover and feel fine. On 2 occasions I had a few glasses of white wine then an hour after being in bed I start badly retching, sick everywhere and diarrhoea. This lasts about 7 hours then I feel awful - pain round my lower back. I've read about additives that are used to preserve food and drink, and it's high in white wine so I don't know if it's that - all I know is how bad it makes u feel

Your writing is poor and not easy to understand. Since you noticed you wrote a hard to read text, you should have gone back and correct it.

Hey,
My brother is a type one diabetic and a celiac. I understand that your wife isn't a celiac but he has had similar issues in the past. I understand how scary that can be with a type 1 diabetic. When he "prepares" to drink a lot of things come into play, a major factor is his diet for the days leading up to drinking (yes even just a few drinks). He is also extremely careful about what he drinks, obviously the wheat beer is out of the question with the celiac and the type 1 diabetes (wheat breaks down into sugars) so he doesn't drink most beers. He also cannot do mixed drinks due to the sugar. He usually sticks to vodka or whisky and his choices for mixers are always non sugary (water, tonic water, fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice etc). He doesn't like wine (he is only 22,) but he has tried it on occasion and gets a severe headache from a few sips of American or Austrailian wines (my guess on that is pesticides). Basically research on what the alcohol is made of and turns into once consumed is key in avoiding adverse reactions. We seriously research the alcohol before he drinks anything.

You are exactly right!! Not your place to judge. He didn't say that he suggested that she go out and binge drink or drink every day. Light to moderate consumption occasionally alcohol is ok and sometimes even encouraged for health. Though I will agree with you that the adverse effects may be caused by a reaction of an underlying condition.
