My vet prescribed Cephalexin 500mg cap 2 times a day for my elderly female sheltie for a UTI and within 24 hours she is vomiting, off her food and there is blood in her urine. I am going to have her checked for kidney problems, but the Cephalexin has definitely made it worse.

I have a schnauzer and she recently had an ear infection and the vet prescribed Cephalexin tablet after meals every 12 hours. After 3 days she started to lose control of her bladder in the early morning hours only, and just a four inch patch at first.
I took off these drugs immediate, thinking this might have been a side effect, however, it still persisted and also she was drinking much more water than usual, and more in the evenings. Her weight was also decreasing. We tested the urine and blood and nothing conclusive was evident and we are planning on a cushing test.

It has been awhile since you posted your message. Just in case you are still logging on, cephalexin can cause damage to the tubular structure of the kidneys. The reaction is supposedly rare. A biopsy can confirm the damage.

Another rare reaction is a neurotoxic reaction, which affects the primary brain neurotransmitter, GABA. When cephalexin (also known as Keflex) inhibits GABA, reports of human cases indicate that the patients reacted by way of non-convulsive seizures called non-convulsive status epilepticus. Symptoms in humans are delayed speech, visual difficulties, overall delayed reflexes. The seizures are treated with an anti-seizure medication. There seems to be evidence that people who are treated with anti-seizure medication recover quickly. Those who are not treated with anti-seizure medication can sustain nerve damage. The nerve damage should be temporary.

I am not a health professional. I am a person who took cephalexin, had a neurotoxic reaction, and was mis-diagnosed. It has taken 10 months to recover to almost 100%.

I hope this helps.
