Advil IS ibuprofen, and it IS an NSAID. With Gerd or other GI disorders, you should not be taking any NSAIDS.

I'm a 67 year old female. I've been having right chest pain when swallowing off and on for over 12 yeras. I'm healthy, eat very well, go to alternative doctors, no smoking, no drugs, no bread, and very little sugar. No one has been able to help me. It happens randomly. As soon as I swallow I get a strong pain in my right chest which radiates thru to my right shoulder blade in my back. I can feel the food as it goes down and once it gets to my stomach the pain is completely gone. Chewing my food better and eating slower does help a little sometimes but not always.

I have also started experiencing this today and I've been rather bloated lately. What's the prognosis for this?

I have been reading this thread with interest, I noticed that there is some frustration that people promise to post back after assessment, but fail to do so, so I thought I would share my experience and the results.

Around three weeks ago I started experiencing pain when I swallowed, liquids or solids, in the centre of my chest behind the breastbone. It felt like there was an obstruction. It was so uncomfortable I stopped eating. A day later this was accompanied by 'crushing' chest pains, especially when lying down and first thing in the morning. So bad I couldn't bear to wear a bra or tight fitting clothing. I was also experiencing palpitations and racing heart rate. I thought I was having a heart attack.

I went to see my GP, I was particulary concerned as my mother had cancer of the esophagus and experienced similar symptoms. She told me she thought it was most likely a hiatus hernia, possibly Barrett's esophagus with an outside chance of cancer - outside because she thought statistically unlikely because of my age (53). She said she was taking the symptoms 'very seriously', but to try not to worry! She put the heart racing down to my anxiety about the situation.

She told be to take omeprazole daily, Gaviscon Advance four times a day and ordered full bloods and stool sample. All came back fine. By now I had had these symptoms for two weeks, although the chest pains were now gone and the swallowing improving. She then referred me to the hospital for a gastroscopy (got an appointment in two days).

I have today been for the procedure - not the most pleasant thing I have experienced, but I opted not to be sedated and it really wasn't that bad. The outcome is my espophagus is normal, no hiatus hernia or anything to concern.

It transpires that the most likely cause of the problem was naproxen (believe it is Aleve in the US). I was told to take it twice a day (with omeprazle once a day) for knee pain. My dr told me to stop taking it on my first visit to her with these symptoms, and my knee consultant said he thought it was very likely to cause.

I googled naproxen and found all the symptoms I experienced could be linked to the medication.

Hope this is of help or reassurance to some.

What you experienced is very similar to what i'm experiencing now. When i eat or drink water it became painful when it reaches to my mid part of my chest. Feels a bit heavy when i take deep breaths. When did your experienced lasted? What over the counter medication did you took? A quick response would be highly appreciated!

I have this problem too. I am a 17-year-old male. Whenever I swallow anything (even spit), there is pain on the right side of my chest, specifically 2cm top left of my nipple (if you are facing me). The pain occurs for about 2 seconds, then goes away. This started happening about 5-7 days before this post was released. Any idea what's the problem?
