Have had acid reflux for years and have taken various blockers and acid reducers which did not seem to work for very long, then started reading about alkalines and acidics and PH level balancing. Basically, you just need to get a bottle of aplle Cider Vinigar- t teaspoons with water or mix it with apple juice. no more acid reflux. As a matter of fact my digestive system, blood pressure and cholesterol is at a much healthier level.

I too was having a meal and halfway through it when I swallowed I got this searing pain in my chest, back and head.  It started literally that suddenly and everytime I swallowed I got the same pain - quite excruciating.  I took a couple of asprins and some rennie for indigestion but it just got worse and worse.  The next day it was just as bad everytime I swallowed.

What I did was have a hot bath which seemed to ease things a little, then I slowly drank a couple of bottles of fizzy tonic water with quinine and ate some small slices of bread and after 2 minutes I was back to normal.

It appears that I had some trapped air somwhere which was causing severe indigestion and I think the fizzy tonic helped me burp a few times and as for the bread perhaps moved things along and released any trapped air.

I cant guarantee it is a definite remedy but certainly worth a go.

The symptoms mentioned above are what im feeling now. im having pain everytime i swallow and drink especially in the mid chest area along the esophagus i guess. Prior to this, i have had tonsillopharyngitis  and sores on my mouth and tongue, and took prescribed clindamycin caps for 7 days. What could be causing this pain?

It could be a number of conditions depending on your age and past medical history. Have you had trouble with swallowing in the past, any problems with indigestion, heartburn, have you had any previous episodes of pain in and around the chest and abdomen.

A number of conditions could account for your pain. It could be esophagitis in which the lining of your esophagus might be inflamed or even ulcerated as a result of reflux of stomatch acid into the esophagus. It can also result from some medicine being stuck in your esophagus (some medications for osteoporosis particularly can cause this problem). I might not consider the severe condition of Esophageal rupture in your case but if your pain continues to get worse and you get a fever and fast heart rate you should definetly go to a doctor.

I can think of three other conditions as well. First is a stomach ulcer which could produce pain in the areas you mentioned. Another could be cholecystitis: an inflamation of the gallbladder. In such cases you might feel some nausea and vomiting as well. You might have a fever too.

I dont know your age so I cannot say that the chest pain you are feeling could be related to your heart. That can be possible if you are close to or over 50. It could be angina.

Another condition could be Costochondritis. It is an inflammation of the costal cartilages (cartilage which join your ribs to the front of your chest).

My recommendation would be to take some tylenol and antacids or if you have over the counter prilosec. Do not take Ibuprofen or any other NSAID drug, it will worsen your condition in case you do have a stomach ulcer.

In case your pain worsens, you develop fever, fast heart rate or nausea and vomiting then you shouldnt waste time and go to the doctor.

Edit: I see that you say you take an appetite suppressant, which drug was that?

I'm getting a burning pain in my chest every time I swallow, much like I did when I was choking on a nut. I've also had a bad headache as well as a constant 'tummy tickle'. Could these symptoms be linked?

I am a 21 year old female and have an almost perfect medical history.

About 3 days ago now, every time i eat, drink, swallow; no matter the consistancy, i feel a sharp sensation under my breastbone in the middle of my chest, top of the rib cage.

It feels like there is a 'windy bubble' (not sure how to describe it!) stuck at the bottom? I can feel my food going down and almost know when it is going to reach the sharp point.

I have also been a bit 'windy' (sorry) since it as i feel like i am trying to burp out the air that i feel like is trapped.

Is this trapped wind? Or is this something else?

Please someone help.

Hi everyone,

I guess I shoudl start off by saying I'm not a doctor, but was experiencing some symptoms such as a sharp pain( kind of like smoeone poked me in the left side of my stomach ) every time I took a drink of anything( mostly water) .. It did not do it with food for me.. just liquids.. and  I did read all the messages yesterday..and got even more stressed out.. so this morning I went to the doctor to get checked out and decided to post what he said here.. it may help or it may not but atleast its something.

He said that most people who have pains like i have most likely have an ulcer. They are usually caused by high stress, heavy drinking, and taking advils or other similar medication.. I don't drink or take medication.. so it was a bit weird in my case i guess.. but anyways.. point is that he simply prescribed me nexium. Which is mostly taken for heart burn and acid reflux but it also treats ulcers and prevents them.. Most acid reflux medication will help as well.. He even said that if I didn't have a health plan I could probobly just take something over the counter like pepto and see if that helped..

So yeah, I was never bothered with heart burn. .or acid relfux...or indigestion .. nothing like that.. still till this day.. its simple feels like someone pokes me under my left breast every time I drink.

So now I am going to start taking a nexium a day.. for 30 days.. however, he did advise me that if my stool ever got extremely dark it was a sign that my stomach digested blood and should go get checked right away.. but so far.. good stool.. no need for that..

If I don't reply to this email within 30 days.. it means it worked.. if I had to go through other steps I will reply to this post just to update..

Again. never did this before.. it may help, it may not, but i figured it was better than nothing..

Well I finally went to the doctor, and what had happend was, when I was sick, I took some ibuprofen and layed down right after causing some of the pills to stay in my esophagus causing many many ulcers/sores. They are treating it with over the counter omeprozole. BUT to help all you out that are having problems right this moment go to the store and by MYLANTA!!! its a chalky liquid that coats the esophagus and stomach relieving about 75% of the pain. Hope this helps!

I'm a 17 year old female and have had most of the symptoms already listed.

In the beginning it was food and water or anytime I swallowed i would experience the pain, but its been about 3 or more days now and so far today it's only occured when i swallow liquids. I only felt it for certain consistancies of food or most so i think it may just be a throat infection, but typically when this happens( i've had many issues with my throat, strep, and chronic sore throats) it's only in my throat not a sharp pain in my chest. With this I experience both pain in my throat which progresses as it reaches my mid chest as if it's burning, and it lingers in my throat for at least 10 mins, accompanied with headaches(probably from the pain).

I am 29 year old male, and I work as an inpatient pharmacist in a hospital. The killer chest pain after swallowing started about 4 days ago. The only exacerbating factor I could think of is I had been taking 4 days of oral Clindamycin (Cleocin), which is an antibiotic, for a tooth abcess. I spoke to our emergency room physician, and he said this drug specifically causes esophagitis (inflamed "food pipe"), as do NSAIDS such as aspirin, ibuprofen, aleve. Taking cleocin with a full glass of water helps prevent this problem.

Luckily, I am at the end of my course of therapy for the antibiotic. I would NOT recommend stopping an antibiotic early without consulting a physician. THEY DON'T DO THEIR JOB IF YOU DON'T TAKE THE ENTIRE COURSE.
