I am a masters track athlete. As a young man I was skinny and could not gain weight. As I approached 45-50 I started to get a belly. I used to love donuts, chips, hot dogs, pizza. When I started to diet and watch my intake I was able to loose weight. But I still craved those fatty foods. About 2 weeks ago I thought I had a brillant idea when I decided not to swallow some bar b que chips I was eating. I couldn't believe that I was still able to enjoy the chips and then just simply spit them out. I later had some cup cakes and did the same. For the past couple weeks I have been eating healthy meals and exercising but whenever I eat something unhealthy I release it. I read the posts and feel sorry for the writers who have eating disorders and I could see how this could develop into one but for me it seems to be just a precaution. I have actually been able to reduce my weight, which has only been possible before with strict self control, also something I can't seem to maintain. Also after I release the food (chew and release) and I see it in a cup I am disgusted by the fact that I used to swallow this disgusting mess. I think this technique is working for me but if you are someone who is doing it for the wrong reasons then I would say be carefull. I was interested in learning that the sugars are not excluded from digestion so I will probably try to limit my intake. Rinsing also seems like a good idea. If there are any serious medical reasons why this could be harmful please repsond, otherwise I will continue happily chewing and releasing my junk food.

I don't think that there is a physical health concern in that situation. Although I do not think that the mental aspect of it is entirely healthy. It is a little extreme to be disgusted by it. It is true that too much junk food can be bad for your weight and health, but it isn't as though they are filled with toxic ingredients. It is okay to have a sweet tooth and to treat yourself with a cupcake every once in a while as long as you maintain healthy exercising habits and eating habits regularly. I think that instead of chewing and spitting, you should treat yourself every once in a while and actually eat it. Just a suggestion... That way you can eat what you used to love, but you won't eat it enough to make you unhealthy.
