Hi I have a hernia on my stoma too. Did you get your colostomy reversed? Did they take care of your hernia too at the same time as reversal . I am going to the Dr on Nov 4 2015 to talk about the reversal. I'd like to know how you are doing. How long for recovery etc. I am a dog musher with 10 dogs. Like to know about recovery time tg so so much. Sincerely Sue

I had an episode of diverticulitis 10 years ago (2006) I was admitted to the hospital put on antibiotics for 24 hours, within that time frame I was feeling 90% and was discharge. Over the course of 10 years I would have "flare ups" but with some antibiotics it always knocked it out. In April 2016 the antibiotics weren't helping ended up in the ER and admitted to the hospital where they put me on antibiotics for 6 days along with lots of Dilaudid for the pain. I don't do well on narcotics of any sort so that added to feeling like c**p, finally on day 6 I woke my head up enough and requested another CAT scan and the surgeon. He determined I had 5 big abscesses and a small perforation which needed surgery immediately. Once in surgery he determined that the infected colon needed to be removed (7 inches) and a colostomy bag was placed to allow the colon to heal. Once I went to see a "colostomy nurse" the bag was no issue for me. I ate nothing but foods that were super high in protein, no sugar, no processed food and no dairy( I love love milk) for 12 weeks then I returned back to surgery for a reversal and ovarian/fallopian tube removal since I tested positive for the ovarian cancer gene(I'm 54). The surgery itself went well but again my puking was because of the morphine, I was in the hospital for 6 days and currently on week 3 of recovery. I have been eating mainly high protein whole foods and 16- 8oz of water a day for the healing and have slowly been adding the fiber. The bowel movements have returned back to normal and occasionally a few pains here and there because I didn't drink enough water(which I can't stand lol). None of this has been easy, surgery is awful but necessary. Luckily, I'm past string bikinis because my abdomen looks like I've been through a battle! haha Stay positive eat high protein organic foods, no sugar or processed foods or milk, take natural multivitamins and some vitamin C to help your body heal and sleep a lot so your energy can go to healing. I returned back to work 3-4 hours feeling pretty normal except low energy which I expect to return in the next few months. The only regret I have is that 10 years ago I didn't have a colonoscopy and see a naturalist doctor to figure out what foods to eat or not eat to prevent this whole surgery thing. It's not fun but it does get better each day. Hang in there!
