Well,

That kinda says it all. I am doing about the same as I was 3 weeks ago when I posted last. I still have neck pain everyday and am now seeing a massage therapist to try to stop my muscle pains. Most of my pains in my shoulders are from muscle issues and the pain in my neack seems to be related to my surgery or maybe my non-fused disc. I have that annoying water in the center of my shoulder blades... or as my sis describes it as a cold burning. I also have that nerve pain down my right shoulder at times and all my symptoms just seem to have settled in. I can now do things throughout the day and I am learning when to stop and take breaks. I still have that desire to push it way too far when it comes to lifting... I just feel helpless sometimes. I used to be so strong and feel that I still am so I try. I should not.

Well, I believe this is a good update no matter what it sounded like. I just wanted to keep my journal updated.

Thanks for reading, it means alot for me to hear from my friends in here from time to time.

Take care,
Rob

Hi all,

I needed to post an update for a while now but I got busy with the fishing season starting up.

Saying that, I am doing better. I have some bad mornings where I cannot get out of bed without a huge amount of pain but for the most part I do ok most mornings now. I have bad pain after mowing the lawn and such activities but if I take it easy I am ok. I am still on Vicodine though andf I wonder how much pain that is masking. I tried to ween myself off of my Neurontin and that failed with my pain getting real bad after 3 days of only taking 2 instead of 3 pills/day.

I will be starting a skills retraining program when my doctor gives them the go ahead... if he does.

take care all,
Rob

Rob-

Glad to hear you are doing better (?).
What type of skills retraining program will you be starting?
This ( I think) was offered to me through vocational rehab. I could have been retrained to do a job or I could have persued a college education.
I would have been willing to do it but I knew my body would not allow me to sit at a desk, stand, work on a computer, look down to write or read for long periods of time. The list goes on and on.
I'm not trying to discourage you in anyway but make sure you can handle the training program before you give up your disability.
At my disability hearing there was a Vocational Rehab expert present to testify on Soc Sec's behalf. The vocational expert testified with all of the limits I had that I would not be capable of doing any job.

Like I said I am not trying to discourage you just want to give you something to think about.

Ok, I'm back.

I understand the question mark thingie... In my BVR (Bureau of Vocational Rehab in Ohio) they said they will have to do an IPE which is a plan of action for me and to set goals for me, also they will be evaluating my interests and help me determine what I want and can do. Then they see what they can do to train me for that field. BUT, in my 1st letter from my surgeon he said they could help me and I was seeking a new career that fit my limitations. THEN in his 2nd letter he said that I was unable to work due to my weight/movement restrictions and pain. He thought it was the Disability committee that was asking, I know it. So BVR cannot start with me nor can they help supply me with any physical rehab until my surgeon releases me and that imposes another problem... I had to file for bankruptcy on his bill and now I don't think he will be willing to help me like he said he would before in giving me any letters I needed even for my disability. Now I think he will take his time and be brief.

My divorce is now final. Just to let you know...

Later, and good luck to all,

Rob

P.S. Nice to hear from you both(Karen, Deb).

Hi Rob

Hang in there.

I am 39 years of age and reasonably fit, I did a half marathon last year, but have been troubled with pain in the right arm and all the muscles in my back and neck knotting up on a regular basis. I train karate and broke my right wrist about 3 years ago and always put down the arm pain as cartlidge damage, however, a MRI scan showed I had a bulging disc, it was pressing on the nerve and there was concern if we did not act the nerve damage would be permanent. The nuerosurgeon was good, stated he had professional rugby players who had a neck fusion and still played.

I had a C5 / C6 Fusion done 4 weeks ago, the surgeon went in through the front of the neck removed the disc and fixed the titanium plate successfully. The travelling pain in my right arm disappeared. For the first 2 weeks I was prescribed Nexium and Celebrex (anti inflamatory) tablets. I was also given strong painkillers.
The scar on my neck is fairly minimal which I am grateful for. I was advised to stick micropore tape over the wound for the first 4 weeks to help keep the skin tone and minimise scarring which I have done.
After 4 weeks I have stopped taking all medication apart from Panadene xtra at night. I have started driving again (missed driving). I am walking for up to an hour most days, the pain seems more muscular now than in my spine near the injury. I find that I hit the wall at a point in the day where I just have to sit and rest for at least 30 mins.
I think after reading some of these stories I would say my surgery has been successful to this point, not having any of the complications and intense pain, dont get me wrong though, it has been painful for the first few weeks.
I think the worst thing is the fear of doing something, which would be classed as too much, causing damage to the fusion and neck.. The problem is what is too much.. no one can seem to give me an answer. I am seeing the surgeon next week and will ask some of these questions.
I enjoy running and martial arts and I hope to be able to do these activities again, time will tell I suppose.
I think a lot of these procedures are done after car accidents or long term injuries which complicate the recovery process. I was lucky to have one area in an otherwise healthy spine that needed fixing.
I am very pleased with the outcome of the surgery and hope my recovery continues....

Hi guys! Gabapentin and Neurontin are the same things. I have been taking Neurontin (800 mg), flexeril, and many others since BEFORE surgery. Still on them... I don't know if the surgery made it worse, but it didn't make it better. You feel deflated and out of options. I have disc degeneration and I am only 43. I worry about where I will be in 20 years. I guess we just have to take it day by day.

I am now 19 weeks post surgery. I had 2 sections where they replaced my discs with cadaver material and put in the metal plates.

I am happy to say that from the moment I woke up in the hospital post-op, I have not had any pain. I had some stiffness in the shoulder blades for a bit afterwords and honeslty the worst part for me was the voice. It took 8 weeks before I had a semi normal voice and since I am a teacher it scared the heck out of me.

I am still restricted from doing more than walking and of course can't life more than 5 pounds, but in 3 weeks I have a follow up and should be mostly cleared.

I feel so bad for those of you with horror stories. I have 2 people at my work and know of 2 others who have had the surgery and are all doing fantastic - one is even a football coach who has no problems working out with his kids.

My doc told me the possibilites before we began and he also told me that mental attitude has a lot to do with recovery (which we all know).

When you are in pain or frustrated with your recovery - remember, depending on your status before surgery, you  might have been a small fender bender away from being paralyzed. I will take a little or even a lot of discomfort over that option any day.

I hope you continue to do better and seriously - stay positive because it could be worse!

Hi, my name is Joyce. I'm almost a yr out from my surgery, I had a 3 level acdf last July - I still have not been able to return to work, I waited until I could barely walk to have my done, had so much swelling and inflammation, spinal fluid could not flow, last mri showed 2 bulging disc in the lumbar area. I still have shoulder pain, numbness down the outside of both arms and problems with my balance, walking. I have no insurance anymore and I've been turned down twice for ssd, I've been a nurse for 28 yrs and I don't know what to do with myself anymore. Thanks for your ear

Hi Robert, wanted to know if you have lost any mobility due to your surgery. I am scheduled for this procedure on the 24th, of Nov. My biggest fear is that i may lose mobility like turning my neck or holding my neck forward or backward any feedback will help.

Hi JennyTDJ,

In all honesty, I have never been better. I followed all of the doctors directions as far as weight restricitons and waiting to start turning my head and such. I hvae full mobility and have not had a a day of pain since I woke up in the hopspital. It is sad when I see the bad reactions or ramificaitons - of course that can come from any surgery, but my surgeon was wonderful and everyone I have met that had the same operation from my surgeon has also had rave reviews. This tells me that there must be plenty of good doctors out there and I hope everyone who needs this surgery has sucess.

I have to say I am scared, I am having the best surgeon do my 3 level c4 to c5 c5 to c6 c6 to c7 ACDF. I have 3 bone spurs pressing against my cord, 1 vertebra 60% on my cord, my arm hurts and legs. My operations is two weeks from today and cannot stop reading stories. I pray I can tell all my surgery was a success. I will post and let you know.
