I had a total thyroidectomy on May 2, 2012
I had a multi-nodular goiter and hypotyroidism, my thyroid was 4x larger than it was supposse to be and was pressin on my trachea, I was experiencing difficulty swallowing and I had a constant sore throat on one side and ear pain on the same side. 4 days after my surgery I developed a hematoma and had to return to the hospital because blood was spurting out of my incision site. I had to have a second surgery and stay in the hospital for a total of 4 more days. Since then I have 0 quality of life. I feel like I got rid of one problem and got 3 more. My voice is total screwed up, I am hoarse and if I try to raise my voice to be heard it just goes lower like a whisper and each day it gets worse instead of better. I chocked when ever I drink any liquids. I am having difficulty breathing. Sometimes I feel like someone is sittting on my chest. Than I started getting severe and painful muscle spasms all over. If I do any kind of activity like walking from my car into the grocery store my pulse speeds way up and I have palpitations. My stomach looks like I am 9 months pregnant, from fluid retention ascites. They checked my TSH 6 weeks after my surgery and my doctor did not call me with the results he just waited for me to come to my next visit which was almost 3 weeks later. My TSH was a shocking 267. Normal level is between 0.5 and 5.0 and mine was 267. So he doubled my tyroxine from 50 mcg to 100mcg. Last June I weighed 160 lbs and I was happy with myself. This June I weigh 220 and I am miserable. 2 months before my surgery I was walking 3 to 3.5 miles a day and watching my diet, I lost nothing. Today I got on the scale and I weighed 232 so I am gaining again and they also told me I have type 2 diabetes, so I havent had any sugar for two months and have beeen staying away from white flour etc and I am gaining weight instead of losing. My BP is out of control also. I dont know what to do if I walk done the hallway I feel like I am going to die so how can I excercise? My doctor said I had myxedema which is a combination of high TSH and low thyroxine, he said it will get better when they get my T4 normal but I think he should have at least put me on 150mcg of thyroxine considering how high my TSH was. So he just sent me on my way and said he will recheck it in 6 more weeks. All my joints hurt and feel like they have fluid on them, it like I can't bend anywhere without difficulty and pain. how this happened to anyone else?
