I'm already on potassium pills and when I get my cortisone shots in my knees I get severe muscle spasms and can't straighten my foot out either the charlie horses in the calves is tremendous
Cortisone stays in the area where it is injected. No way cortisone in the shoulder would cause leg cramps
Cold water spray to site of cramps.
Not true that it stays in your shoulder.
I have had this for almost 15 years and it comes in waves. For me the most important vitamin is magnesium malate. Take as much as you can, increase gradually, before you get diarrhea. I'm sure calcium, potassium and vit D are also important, but magnesium is by far the most important. Certain things trigger them anyway like steroid injections. If I get cramps I wrap the are with a Thermacare wrap tightly. If I am going to lie in bed i will put a tissue between the Thermacare and my skin so I don't burn although they don't make them as hot as they used to be. These also help to keep me from getting the cramps when I am in that phase. Just a heating pad won't do it. It needs the pressure of the wrap. I get up and walk around, sit on the sofa and try to stay calm and distract myself. If I am in a REALLY bad episode I will have to sleep partially sitting on the sofa with pillows propping up my head so I can sleep some. And yes my muscles will then be sore for days afterwards. Doctors have no clue. I have been to neurologists, orthopedists, rheumatologists at Penn and Jefferson - no clue. They just give you muscle relaxants or anti seizure drugs that don't work. And yes my hands cramp and I can't stretch out the cramping muscle becasue then the opposing muscle starts cramping. It's a curse, but SOOOO many people do suffer from this. Truly the magnesium and the Thermacare have been really helpful.
Hello everyone. I got a cortisone shot in my hip one week ago. Have also been woken up every night with cramping in my legs. Especially the calves. Also notice that during the day, will get cramping in my feet and toes. A couple of years ago, received a shot in my knee, but never had the cramping afterward. As I'm sitting here typing, am having the muscle spasms. So I gather from what I've just read that magnesium seems to be the key ?
Had a epidural of cortisone last week.... charlie horses in my legs and toes so bad.... come straight out of bed all night long! Been three days cramping and its getting worse!
I'm sorry you suffer with these HORRIBLE SPASMS, but I'm so glad to know it's not just me. When I tell the doctors they look like I need to see a psychiatrist!!!! Ugh.... You describe my episodes to the tee... Someone has to know what this is and how to cure or manage it, it's the very WORST!! Thanks for sharing, I will try your suggestions. I want a answer and relief!!
The same thing has happened to me, twice. My doctor says not related. I have seen enough anecdotal evidence and my own experience (SI injection last Tuesday, severe leg and foot cramps today), to think there is a direct correlation. The first time it happened I went to the ER, twice. They found nothing. Now I am trying to head them off at the pass with a muscle relaxer and foam rolling.
Uh...not a doc...but I'm not sure about that statement
I have had shots in my thumbs for arthritis .....makes me feel better all over ...back, knees
I have had the cramping this time of calves and fingers...a first for me

I had a steroid injection in my back March 2, 2017. I immediately started having Charlie horses in my legs, feet and toes that are so bad. I called my Orthopedic Dr to ask if the steroid shot could cause that and he said no. That night (of the day I called my Dr) I woke up with Charlie Horses in both legs, feet & toes at the same time. It was the worst pain I've EVER been in. I passed out multiple times. My husband called and ambulance and the ER doc said the same thing. NO way that the steroid could cause this. They tested all levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium, dehydration, etc and all my levels were great. The only thing it an be is that injection. We are now on April 22nd and I have Charley Horses at least 4-8 times a night. Not sure what the solution is expect wait for this to leave my system. Just as a back up, I'm taking magnesium, potassium, calcium, B-Complex. Nothing seems to help.
I had my second cortisone injection in my lower back on March 16th. I didn't make the connection to the cortisone until I started reading these stories. I've had severe muscle cramping in my legs and feet every single night for at least a month now. Nothing is working. My orthopedic doctor who gave me the injections said he has never heard of such a side effect. Someone needs to do research on this!!!! I'll never get another injection again. My back pain was awful, but I no longer sleep because of the cramping. During the day I'm dealing with the residual pain. My primary care physician has recommended Calcium-Magnesium 500-250. That is my next hope after trying dozens of other remedies. Waiting for it to be delivered from amazon. Has anyone had good results from Calcium-Magnesium?

Why am I sore from cortisone shot
Had my first cortisone shots 5 weeks ago in my knees, started with light Charlie horses in my feet and calves a couple of times a night and tonight got a really painful one in my thigh! Finally put 2 and 2 together. Also am feeling very low since the shot too. No more cortisone for me. So sorry for you experience.
