The same thing is happening to me. I started working out 2 weeks ago Saturday and last week on Saturday I started spotting and cramping. I have not worked out in 2 years before this. I am supposed to start my period Sunday so I am hoping I get it and am not pregnant.

I started doing the C25K app, and am experiencing spotting. I ran a lot in highschool, no issues (wasn't on the pill either). Now I'm in my late 20s and it's a whole new world (gah). It was only a little spotting at first, and I brushed it off as ovulatory bleeding (which is normal. Never happened to me before, but, like i said, I'm in my late 20s now and figured I was just changing). However, as I've increased my run time, it has gotten worse. What boggles my mind is that I haven't even made it to 5k yet. I'm thinking there's no way my exercise is so intense as to bring on menstrual changes but, I also do yoga on the days I don't run so...maybe it is? Or we are all just snowflakes lol.
I plan to make an appt with my ob/gyn to be safe. But wanted to thank all of you ladies for sharing. I was starting to get really scared. It's nice to know someone else has had this problem. I don't want to stop working out either, but the idea of lowering my workout intensity is waaaaaaaaay more appealing compared to dealing with cancer or a hormone imbalance.

This is interesting. I am 44 and have been running for 3 years now but 6 months ago I started increasing my distance and push myself harder. I also do gym twice a week and am of healthy weight. The spotting started approximately at the same time but I also started drinking more coffee after buying an espresso machine. I have a lot at work too. I wonder if that's the cause?

Hi I commented on this thread about 8 years ago. I'm fine. The doctor found some smal fibroids on an ultrasound and thought maybe it was being rubbed a bit when I ran. The symptoms stopped within a year and never returned . There was no action to take on the fibroids they weren't big or any reason to operate a lot of women have them and don't even know .

What a relief to see that many other women have experienced the same issue after running.
I started running for the first time in my life (43) and experienced spotting as well for one to two days mid cycle. It concerned me because I have been extremely regular all my life and seldom have been on any birth control.
My theory is that the bleeding would probably indicate that we are provably not ovulating and thus the reason for the mid cycle bleeding. Progesterone is secreted during ovulation, but if ovulation does not happen estrogen increases and thus bleeding occurs. Just as women who workout frequently and rigorously sometimes loose their periods. Biologically their body thinks they are in a starvation or threatened mode and so it naturally protects itself and any potential pregnancy, buy disrupting the cycle to such an extent that there's no more period.
I am certaintly not an athlete so I know it's not the same but perhaps some of us if our body experiences a sudden and intense increase in physical exertion, it sparks some sort of biological protection mechanism because the body thinks it's under attack (as running can be perceived by the body as highly stressful) or starvation (the calories it burns alone could trigger this). So perhaps, some women have this protection mechanism that triggers ovulation to stop. As most women, just reading the comments here seem to have things return to normal once they stop the running and convert to something a little less rigorous.

Yes this happens to me! I am 29 and for the past 2 years anytime I work out hard (which is 1-2 times a week) I will bleed. It's so annoying!!! It also happens if I am stressed. I've been to the doctor an endless amount of times about this (even did the wand ultrasound to check if everything looked ok). I keep being told everything looks good and normal. Meanwhile I am bleeding (though light) more often than I am not and it's embarrassing (and scary because I keep thinking deep down something must be off?) Aside from the spotting my periods come normally like clockwork and I keep being told I'm fine. *shrugs* guess it just happens to some of us?

Hi, I'm 25 and I'm sooooo relieved when I found this post. I started experiencing spotting (never happened to me before) last year after 4 days of long-hour walking, mid-cycle. I finished my 21km marathon 9 days ago, and the spotting came back, mid-cycle as well. I did ultrasound and urine test and it came out fine. I guess probably it was just intense movements that triggered all these.

Me too, always, now in my 40s. I would like to know if anyone who has experienced this long term got pregnant while still exercising and spotting? I experienced this during the years I did triathlon. Bleeding was ferocious during/after tough long races, and I had periods that lasted up to 8 weeks after ironmans, clearly that was an unhealthy strain, and it took over a year for my cycle to mostly normalize again. I’ve been irregular my whole life. Then I had a serious leg injury, started a new job and didn’t exercise for basically a year straight. I just did my first run back (ran 3 walked 2) and came home to it :-( I should have just ovulated last week and we are trying to get pregnant... surely I should not have to quit running altogether? And 5 miles or less is not a big strain if you’ve been doing it your whole life?

(I also have had all hormones checked several times and was told they levels for a woman 5-6 yrs younger, numerous ultrasounds and no known fibroids or even cysts at checkup time -have had them prior to triathlon years so perhaps that’s part of it. I would like to get back in shape now but this worries me that it happens even after a year off, I thought it was the strain of hard training before)

They found a fibroid with me too and 2 attempts to remove it were unsuccessful because of where it is. Biopsies came back fine but it's really put me off running which is very depressing. Doctor said I could have it done under general anaesthetic but this scares me too. So glad I'm not the only one. I think I'm going to start running again next week as i can't let this thing rule my life.
I pulled out of my first half marathon because of that but I'm determined to run it this year x

I'm glad to find out I'm not the only woman on earth having spotting or light bleeding after strenuous exercise. I have had this issue on and off for years and usually when I do sprinting or fast running. How weird is that.

I just started exercising again and I noticed that my cycle only lasted 2 and a half days compared to the 4-5 per usual. Can exercise have an effect on this, or is there some other reason for it?
Thank you.

I'm happy you mentioned caffeine my intake has increased recently along with my daily workload. Plus working out regularly.
