I’ve been using glargine for a while now and recently had to up my dose. Problem is I’m now completely starving all the time and it’s driving me mad! My blood sugars have been better since I upped the dose but has anyone got any ideas about what I can do to stop me eating all the time. It’s driving me mad!
Hi! You’ll know as you’re using glargine that it’s a long acting insulin so you need to treat it with the respect that it deserves. But the truth is that one of the good things about it is that if it’s controlling your blood sugar correctly it shouldn’t make you feel hungry – in fact glargine is quite well documented for making you lose weight rather than putting it on. If you’re finding that you’re getting really hungry could it be that your dose adjustment is just a little too high? Being hyperglycaemic is well known for making you feel starving and driving you to eat, so maybe it’s a good idea to make a note of when you’re making your injections and when you’re getting really hungry - a good place to start? If you find that there’s a connection you need to get you dose checked out.
If all else fails and you can’t manage to control the way you feel you should go and see your doc anyway, because at the end of the day there’s no point in being unhappy with what you’re taking, and if you find that you need to either change you dose back or consider a different insulin it’s gotta be better than being unhappy and fed up…. Oh and starving? Good luck!
Oh and P.S. - it's better to eat some foods with a low glycaemic index as well to make sure that you don't have a sugar surge after eating which may well help in managing how hungry you are and how you feel. :-)
