Each modality helps the Radiology to interpret and diagnose. Ultrasound uses sound waves, but it is not a better alternative. The medical industry does not offer breast ultrasound in place of breast mammography. Mammography is still 90-95% accurate; and the exam takes 7-10 minutes to perform. Digital breast mammography, (2D) is what most facilities have today; and requires less radiation than the old film-screen systems. Ultrasound is used as a "secondary" modality to verify lesions/masses, or cysts; or help guide the Radiologist in a needle localization. Ultrasound has the ability to see whether or not masses are fluid filled, or solid. It would take hours to do full breast sonography. Breast MRI uses magnetic energy. It also is done as a secondary imaging to mammography - generally to verify something seen on the mammogram, and requires a contrast injection. The procedure takes up to 30 minutes, and runs a risk of side effects from the contrast media. Breast tomosynthesis is very similar to breast mammography, still using compression, but the tube moves. It was created from the idea from a kidney procedure, called "IVP, Intravenous pyelogram with tomos." Or tomograms - thin slices taken as the tube moves, and blurs out other structures. I believe that breast tomosynthesis (3D) is a better tool for breast health, but it increases the dose to the breast. (Still under the limits - which is good - and better visualization of the breast.) And it offers individual slices of the breast and 2D images.

I can’t give you any encouragement because unfortunately I suffered the same pain as you have...4 years ago now. I complained 3 days later and have had 2 unltrasound tests to see what was damaged. I’d recommend you follow up a compensation claim before the 3 year deadline. It didn’t matter that I complained to the Breast clinic right away, it’s the time you take up the legal complaint.

I had told the technician I had a tender area in my left breast after suffering mastitis whilst breast feeding my 3 babies. And also the fact I had just started anticoagulants 2 weeks previously. There was a great risk of bleeding but she still flattened me to a pancake!! The clinic admitted she used more pressure than previous technicians. I could murder her if I found her...I’ve had 4 tears of ago because of her!

I did get some chilli cream from my doctor that burns like hell, but it sometimes causes a distraction, but no cure. Sorry, I’m so so angry too! Avril

Exactly like my experience. The technician was the same way: cold and unresponsive to my complaints of PAIN except to say "they have to do it to find the bad stuff." That's patronizing & insulting, esp. to someone who has already been thru cancer treatment. (Or: I don't care - we need to do it anyway and if you don't like it, too bad.) I swear she was trying to pull my breast off of my body! OMG. I took Rx pain meds for several days afterward. Microcalcification in scar tissue they biopsied after this mammo was negative.Since biopsy involved more mammography I insisted on taking 2 Rx pain pills first. But this doesn't prevent breast damage from all that pressure. I don't want to go back either in 6 mos. IF I do, I will take Rx pain meds FIRST. It pays to save them from previous procedures and have some on hand. I never had any mammo pain like this before cancer treatment. If mammo tech's don't believe some women have intense pain, I wish it would happen to THEM. If you are in such extreme pain you can't hold still enough either & they get a blurry image.

I aldo had a mammogram in Dec 2017. I have had severe pain in my right breast ever since. The mammo was normal. A follow-up ultrasound was also normal. I am seeing a breast specislist now and she is ordering an MRI. It is a deep burning pain coming from under my nipple. At times it goes away or subsides for a little while. Please keep me posted on yours. And, good luck. Mm

I am wondering how you are feeling and how long, if any you had pain after. I had my very 1st mammo this past July 2107, at age 42. I had a very nice nurse who did the procedure. I had to have my left breast had to be re-done because she didn't get a good read. Ever since then, I have had pain/discomfort in my left breast. I first was just writing it off because they said my breasts may hurt after. The pain has been off & on, so I was associating it with my menstural cycles. I did a web md last week & it came out that I could have fybrostic breasts. I'm definitely nervous about what is going on. I'm out of the country, in Ireland & am planning to get a opinion here to see what they suggest. Any other insight you may have would be great.

After 3 months I am still struggling with pain in my breast from the mammogram.
No one will lister to me.
They are focuses on the tearing under my breast that happened when they did my mammogram, yes you read this right.
Some days it is better amd other days the uncomfortable heavy feeling I have keep a me from doing anything.
I wish someone would listen to me?
I had the 3D one done was this the problem?
Was it nerve damage?
Was it muscle damage?

I had the same situation as you recently. They wanted me to have a biopsy. At first I agreed, then started research into the horrors and " the fact that it is unnecessary for 300000 women every year." I told my regular doctor I am saying no and he finally agreed and said it is my right. I will never have another mammogram again. The second technician I had came straight from a concentration camp. She was a rude dictator. I am still suffering emotional effects and it is showing no signs of going away.
This was by far the worst experience of my entire life thus far. and then today I get a letter from the radiology group reminding me to schedule the biopsy. I am not and never going. You are right, the word needs to be spread. I quote one MD who says "Mammography is a Marketing Trick."

I feel damaged and unhealthy after my mammogram also. It hurt so bad I almost passed out and the technician laughed. Veins broke out all over both breast and my chest. My breast feel as if they were detached & now sagging & flatter.
It put my anxiety through the roof. Was bad for my mental health.
Was not a good experience for me. I personally feel it was very aggressive and has done damage.to me. I should have left well enough alone.
My new doctor told me I do not have to go.
Every time I went to the Dr. for a completely different reason they kept harping on me about mammograms. Then I found out they get some sort of points for getting woman to have one.

The same thing happened to me.
I feel violated, The mammogram exposed veins all over my breasts and chest.
It hurts not to wear a bra now also.
I feel like my breasts were detached from my body and lowered 3-4" on my chest.
The mammogram instantly put my anxiety through the roof.
Was very bad for my mental health.
I hope you are doing okay.
My old Dr. was obsessed about me going for a mammogram & she yelled a lot also.
My new Dr. said I do not need to go. He was very understanding. I was not a high risk/does not run in family at all.
