For the past couple of years I've had the problem with constant phlegm building in the back of my throat.  I would be spitting it out constantly throughout the day.  I tried different products and read online threads where people went to the doctor but could not find out a cause or correct solution.

I recently started to educate myself on the food I was eating and was pretty shocked to find out that I was filling myself up with tons of carbs and protein,  but was still starving myself nutritionally.  After first entertaining myself with food documentaries and then some books, they got me interested in what I was actually feeding myself.

Starting this year i switched to raw vegetable base foods and included tons of healthy fats from flax seeds, avocado  etc. I still occasionally eat normal food, but all my phlegm problems went away about a month and a half ago.

I don't know how much this is truly connected, but I feel like the switch in foods solved the problem.  It seems like a lot of problems are caused by a poor nutritional diet.  Don't treat a symptom, see if you can find the root of the problem first.  Let me know if anyone is up for assessing and changing their diet.  Id be interested if it works for you too.

Why not point your doctor to this web page if he doesn't believe you. He only has to Look in your throat to see t he mucus, if he didn't even do that then he is pretty incompetent.

Sounds like a bricanyl inhaler or preventer you are describing.

I have used a Neti Pot with VERY good results, just be sure to breathe through your mouth constantly while pouring AND use water that has been heated to boiling, add salt & stir well to dissolve, let sit and cool to lukewarm before using. This is very important, as water can contain bacteria that has been known to travel to the brain and cause a lethal infection.

What helped me further is the "Master Cleanse" Diet, the one with Lemons, Maple Syrup and Cayenne Pepper. Once I started swigging a few oz of Lemonade w/Pepper mixed in it, it cut through the phlegm and I also felt as though my chronic pain had all but disappeared. I went off of it after 5 days and I am going back on, starting tomorrow. Now that I know how I feel lousy again (the mucus in my throat returned immediately and ) after eating solid food, I'm going to use the diet tea and start over again ASAP. I personally think that Excessive Mucus is caused by too many toxins in the body and it's a way of our bodies either trying to eliminate these substances or protect sensitive tissues.

Has anybody heard of catarrh? Its sounds like what most people describe on this post. Might be a good thing to look up.

I too have had the excessive mucous in my throat for the past four years.

I had no problems breathing through my nose until I under went surgery for breast cancer. After several months, during that time I had radiation, I could not breathe through my nose and for 10 years suffered. I would breathe through my mouth and literally suck on Halls menthol cough drops. After years I was wondering if the anesthesia tube that was put down my throat scratched the lining of my throat and a build up of scarring developed.

I then had a surgeon operate on my nose and he found that areas in my nose instead of the "tissue" inside should have been solid-like/firm was limp and extremely moist. He removed the tissue and I was able to breathe through my nose after 10 years of suffering.  Unfortunately with this operation I was ALWAYS and CONSTANTLY blowing my nose all the time, but I really didn't mind since I was able to breathe through my nose. I was always carrying a box of kleenex.

I lived with the excessive nose blowing for a number of years, that was much preferred than not breathing through my nose for over 10 years.

When we lived in a tropical climate it was always hot, so I had a fan blowing on my face on my night stand every night.  I had NO problems breathing in and out of my nose.

When my husband retired, I applied for a job and got it working in a warehouse, still literally carrying kleenex and always blowing my nose throughout the day.

Obviously age-wise I had the aches and pains of getting older and a slight case of arthritis aggravated by lifting and carrying packages. Then one day I was walking and I slipped and fell on my side.  I went to the doctor and I asked for the pain killer Tramadol, that a fellow worker was taking who was pleased by the results. Since it is not a narcotic I wasn't too concerned about the addictive part, I just wanted relief from the pain of joints and the fall.

Not only did the Tramadol work on the joint pain, I noticed it cleared-up/dried the mucous in the nose, and my bathroom visits were not as frequent--I was very happy!!!!!!!!!

After taking the Tramadol for several months, I got an easier job at work and decided to go the homeopathic route and just take the gel for joint pain and just use the pain patches.

Wellllllllll, I too noticed the excessive mucous in the back of my throat and would wake up at night coughing choking on the excessive mucous in back of my throat and it felt like I was drowning on my own mucous.

I took the Tramadol and the excessive mucous subsided for a couple of hours.  I tried again to go off the Tramadol and the excessive mucous came back.

So now Sunday September 1, 2013 I am right now writing this and I have the mucous laying in the back of my throat.

My one brother-in-law had EXTREME mucous in his throat and would literally gag on food and would throw up frequently, until he went into the hospital and they stretched something in his throat.  He doesn't have the excessive mucous now.

I am wondering if he had laryngeal (sp) reflux.

I am due for a colonoscopy and I want to have an upper GI done to see if they can see what could possibly be the problem and maybe they can see if something in my throat needs to be stretched.

My job at work I stand so I don't have the excessive mucous in my throat, but when I do sit down or recline I feel like my throat starts closing up.

I am terrified having the colonoscopy done with the upper GI because I am afraid, while being under anesthesia, I will drown and die in my own mucous.

I have put this off for five years.

Since I am a previous cancer patient they are pushing for me to have a colonoscopy because of my age and history.

Because of my arthritis and joint pain I do not sleep 8 hours straight, but when I do and I get up to get ready for work when I do cough I do get the slight yellow colored mucous coming from my chest.  But when I have been up for several hours the mucous is clear and somewhat thick.

I did go to an ENT doctor and he was more interested in the fact that the one side of my nose was collapsing.  I cannot sleep on the one side of my nose because that one side collapses and I can not breathe.  I usually have to sleep on the one side to have the clear breathing out of both sides.

The ENT doctor did suggest I should take an antihistamine that would liquify the slight thick mucous and maybe drain better down my throat. He was the one who gave me a sample of Saline Solution--which did clear out BLACK dirt out of my nose, but the excessive mucous was still there.

It possibly can be allergies because of me working in a dirty warehouse on top of possible food allergies and allergies brought on by enviromental factors------I honestly don't know.

I was truly happy to find this website, courtesy of my sister-in-law, and to know there are MANY people with this problem.

I do use the Saline aerosol that I buy at Sam's/Costco, I have tried the apple cider vinegar and also hydroygen peroxide.

I still take the Tramadol, but I started using a Saline aerosol that the ENT doctor recommended.  When I started using it I would spray it in both sides of my nose hold my nose closed and bend at my waist and just let it settle in the nasal area for about a minute or two.  When I would stand up and blow my nose the stuff that came out was eye opening. After a month everything was clear when I would blow my nose, but unfortunately it did not work on the excessive mucous, but I do use it for preventive maintenance to clear out any crud that settles in my nose from work, but I still have the mucous in my throat.

I then remembered my ears use to bother me, but according to all the doctors I would go to they said my ears were good and clear. I thought since the nose and ears and throat are connected I wanted to clean out the ear canal.  I use hydrogen peroxide and use a couple of drops in both my ears and wait about 5 minutes and turn on my side and let the peroxide drain out.  I did this for about a week and I noticed my ears felt good, but I still had have the mucous in my throat.

I was reading a book, recommended by a co-worker, and decided to take the apple cider vinegar remedy, but it did not clear up the excessive mucous.

I have tried ALL THREE at the SAME time for several weeks, but I still have the excessive mucous.

I don't know if the problem of excessive mucous was from the Tramadol, but my husband is on Tramadol and he doesn't have the excessive mucous. My co-worker and his wife both take it and they don't have this problem.

I was given an antibiotic last year for a spider bite and I too hoped maybe the antibiotic would clear up the mucous, thinking the excessive mucous was caused by a yeast or fungal infection, but the excessive mucous did not clear up.

I do know I don't have the excessive mucous in back of my throat standing for hours during the day.  I just know many times when I sleep in bed, or in a chair and I take a nap, I will sometimes wake up coughing choking on the excessive mucous in back of my throat.

By process of elimination, I want to have an upper GI to check to see if I have laryngeal reflux and/or need to have something stretched in my throat that may eliminate the excessive mucous.

I am honestly and truly scared undergoing a colonoscopy. I really believe I will die drowning in the excessive mucous that will accumulate while undergoing the colonoscopy and the upper GI,.

I don't think there is a vacuum that will take care of the excessive mucous build up during the time I will be under the anesthesia for this procedure.

I have no problem going to the dentist because there is that one vacuum that sucks up the excessive mucous when I undergo teeth cleaning.

I am on thyroid medication and I have a low Vitamin D level and calcium level that I am working on to get to optimal level.

I don't have high blood pressure---just white coat.

I have a little high cholesterol, but I am working on lowering it--but not by medication, by watching what I eat and exercise.

I do wish there was a doctor or someone in the medical community that would read some of our experiences and give us more possible suggestions.

I will try and revisit this site and possibly see if there are any other updated suggestions and I will update my experience with the upper GI.

Xylitol may help y'all. Thera-Breath is the brand I use, and it is amazing, but there are other brands that I haven't tried that also work. I'm pretty sure it is the Xylitol that is the active ingredient. Gargle with the mouthwash as far back in the throat as you can, but also try their nose spray, which has an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial function. It cleared up a life-long infection I had - seriously. You likely have a sinus infection caused by fungus, bacteria or allergens. Neti-pots (use filtered water and ALWAYS BOIL water first to kill bacteria, let it cool to tepid/warm before using) may help a lot too, especially if used while also using the xylitol-containing nasal spray.

This should help with nasal/sinus discharge at the back of throat, and also helps a lot with the bad breath issue some other posters noted. Also, FLOSS! The bacteria between teeth can cause sinus/throat infections and can lead to inflammation throughout the body, plus, sometimes it gives people nasty dragon breath. Really, floss. Use those floss pick things, they are the best invention, ever.

Hope this helps!

After 3 years or so of not being on these blogs I thought I'd come back and share my experience. For years in my late 30's to mid 40's I had white tongue and excessive phlegm in the back of my throat. Suffered just like you. I know how awful the feeling is. Tried most of the doctor recommended stuff that you see on blogs. While I'm no doctor, I believe ultimately my issue was I was acidic internally, causing my pH to be way off. Since moving to a much more alkaline diet 3 years ago the progress has been slow and steady to the point today i feel 99% free of that awful feeling I know too well. I believe the meds that doctors recommend might offer some temporary relief, but for a long-term cure it's going to be your diet. If you can focus on alkaline foods vs. acidic foods I believe this will help, but only if you commit and consistently stick to it for a long period of time. No quick fix here. Further, there's no downside to getting on a better diet in any event, so I don't believe there's much risk. Today, my tongue is healthy looking...no white coating on it, and I rarely have the feeling of phlegm in my throat, and if I do, it's very minor compared to where I once was. I hope this helps someone...trouble is I believe this potential "cure" is so hard to measure and it takes time for your body to adjust and heal. Good luck.
