Hi Terri, I am 32 and found out I have extra lumbar vertebrae I have also been told that I have arthritis and would probably have problem walking by the age of 50 or so. When I was pregnant with my daughter I lost feeling in my legs for two days, I had pain in my hips everytime I put my feet down I felt a shooting pain, went to the doc only to find out is was infact the extra vertebrae, he advised not to have them fused as it would cause more damage than anything else. I go for aqupuncture when possible but take robaxin before I go to bed and that seems to help a bit. My sister had 3 back ops and I told her to ask them to check if she has it too, turns out she has. I really hope everything works out for you, Ive seen what my sister has gone through and it is not easy.

I have been having horrible back pain near my rear end I mean intense. I went to the ER twice in a 2 week period just to be prescribed muscle relaxers and pain meds that really did little justice. The ER doctor the second time referred me to an orthopedic and through that xray i learned that I had an extra vertabrae also...In response to the percentage post my doctor told me it was in about 20% of the population but I later read that night it was 10.. So I guess we can all agree it is not 100% and not common and not to rare....I can relate to everyone on this it is horrible pain.. And hope to get some relief soon....Best wishes to all....

Seems that people with extra vertebrae also have RH negative blood. No one knows why.

So I'm 15 and very young to have back pain but for the last 3 months I've been having bad lower back pain which I thought was accompanied with nerve pain down the front side and backs of my legs including sometimes in my hips. I got an x ray and they told me everything was fine then I went to the PT but her excersises weren't helping me so they sent me to a back specialist. After examination he told me that I had asymmetrical tightness in my leg muscles meaning that in my right leg my quad was tight but looser in the left but my hamstring was tighter in my left and not so much in my right leg. I guess this is suppose to cause pain in my back and what I'm experiencing is not nerve pain... Then he showed me my x ray and kind of nonchalontly told me that I had a 6th vertebrae like "no big deal." He said it wouldn't cause any pain then we just continued to talk about my problem. Then he ordered some blood work for Anemia, thyriod, vitamin D deficency and like two other things I can't remember and said that it could also be the cause of something. He told me it will be a process to stretch out my legs but the thing is, I'm a dancer so I'm use to stretching and I don't understand how I could have gotten so tight, and then it caused my back to hurt. I thought it would have been the opposite. Do you think I could be having pain because of the 6th vertebrae? Did anyone else have a similiar problem like me? It sounds like he is just going to send me back to my PT. It's kind of frustrating. Thanks

I don't know since I'm young and I've never donated blood and I ales him if he could put in a test to see what it was but he said it would look " suspicious" because it wasn't necessary. He was a little odd but still resourceful.

I take alot of muscle relaxants when I am unable to go to physio, but physio really helps you should try acupuncture it hurts the first few times but afterwards the pain stays away for a while after.

I am 39, female, have an extra lumbar vertebrae, have blood type A+, have lousy posture, was diagnosed with MS two years ago and have been down most of the orthodox roads for ongoing - often life-stoppingly chronic - back pain.

The ONLY things that have ever worked for me for any length of time have been changing my mattress and, for the pain, BOWEN THERAPY.

My posture is straighter, my body is generally better behaved and balanced, the pain is now very rare and my head is calmer.

The Bowen felt like such a miracle that I was inspired to go learn how to do it, but now who treats the therapist?

By the way, by "changing my mattress" I meant changing to a softer one that I could actually relax and sleep on, rather than the high-falutin' expensive and recommended orthopaedic one that put me into crippledom every morning.
