Hi, sorry about the crash.

Yes it gets better, but you need to work at it and be careful.

Best treatment I ever found was a physiotherapist.
Great Chiropractors are amazing, but bad ones, not so much.
Acupuncture and massage are useful at relaxing the back, but don't usually provide a quick fix.
Careful exercise is great and the key to long term back health (yoga, pilates)... but be really careful. Working out or stretching too hard can make things much worse.

Surgery is they very last thing to ever consider. Some people's conditions need it, but not most. The problem with surgery, is it damages the most important muscles for back stability.

The extra disk we all share appears to make our backs less stable. Accidents, over exercise, bad sleeping/sitting position, stress and other things can trigger problems. So if you have the extra disk you need to be more aware of back stability.

good luck!

Hi, I have a 6th Lumbar vertebrae. Most of the males in my family do. But none of us have had any back problems as a result. I think with us it might be the opposite( I am in my mid 50s). Not sure if this helped any.

I have the extra vertebra too and find exercise is the only thing that helps my back pain, my back pain is muscular due to the overarching of my lower back. It makes my hips tilt too so to avoid any risks I'm having a c section!

I found out when I was 13 that I had this extra vertebra as it was making me walk funny. It makes my hips angle forwards and knees twist so I get many pains all over- exercise has been the best pain relief, stretching and building the muscles supporting either side of my spine! I even tried hydrotherapy and that was relaxing but sometimes hurt and in the long run didn't really help! I recommend exercise... Especially yoga and good posture. I am now 40 and having my first child ( I put it off so long as I was scared about my physical anomalies) however I'm about to give birth in a few days and have opted for c-section for safety as there's a small chance my hips may be too angled/ narrow to let him out... None of the obstetricians had come across my condition before!

I had chiropractor for my extra vertebrae and ended up almost not being able to walk. I found a great osteopath and he has got me walking again. I'm not sure where you are located but he is in Windsor NSW at Health Dimensions. Owen Grey. I had had every known treatment and only received help once I started Osteopathy. Also you need MSM Alive from TVSN Incredible natural pain relief.

I also have an extra vertebrae and have had problems all my life, but it has gotten worse as I have gotten older. I know this sound crazy, but do any of you have Rh negative blood? That is one of the characteristics of it. Google it and see. I am so frustrated! It does cause pain, regardless of what some say.

Mine started when I was 17, I am now 30. I had my first two children 13 months apart and it aggravated it way more from the constant weight change. I have seen many doctors and this does not seem to get better for me no matter what I do. I suggest with getting pregnant to not do them so close together.

Hello everyone,
I know this post was long time ago but if anyone has an idea about my below question i will very much appreciate it.
My husbanda aunt also has the same situation having an extra vertebra and is causing her back pain as well. She is now over 40 yrs old and she was having this for a long time already. evertime my husbands aunt is having bad pain on her back because of the extra vertebra my husband is telling that the end of it is that his aunt will be paralyzed and there is no way to fix it or to prevent it. I was reading about a lot of articles in google and thats also how i found this thread but I didn't find anything saying that the end result of having this extra vertebra is to be paralyzed or anything like it. My question is, did anyone heard about being paralyzed as caused by the extra vertebra or maybe my husband is only exaggerating it. Thanks in advance

dont get surgery and be carfull when taking pain meds it causes weight gain and that will only put more strain on your back ive been through it already and im totally fine took 2 years to fully recover but i also got to 210 lbs when im a 160 lbs guy after i lost weight and quite smoking for a while (smoking reduces oxegen in the blood and whatnot causeing less blood flow ie makes for more pain) you will pull through ok i promise! take care gl

I have 6 lumbar vertebrae, and was diagnosed with Bertolotti' syndrome. Extreme back pain while standing in one spot, walking, sitting, bending, lifting. Laying down relieves the pain temporarily. I have had spinal injections, been on pain meds, and currently the Spinal Cor Stimulator. Nothing has really helped to the degree of being comfortable enough to maintain an active lifestyle. I am considering surgery to have the bone surgically removed.

I am 44 and was diagnosed with a 6th l.v. at 19. I am an equestrian and even with riding horses starting at age 6 it took 13 years before I had one horse that just jumped in a way that triggered sciatica. I spent 3 months at the chiro and not riding. After that time frame the vertebrae were realigned and I have continued to ride ever since. I maintain with lots of stretching, range of motion exercises and keeping a strong core. Ice/heat and the occasional anti-inflammatory is all I have needed to maintain it since then. I get periodic xrays to check the alignment of my back.
