I learned about 40 years ago that I have an extra lumbar vertebrae, while having Xrays and an MRI for a herniated disk. Since then, I have had to have multiple surgeries: 3 for herniated disks, a lumbar fusion with bone grafted from the back of the pelvic bone, and two more to remove excessive bone and other matter from the fused vertebrae. I asked my doctors whether oir not the extra vertebrae contributed to the need for 6 surgeries, and their answers were somewhat vague. Bottom line is this: the extra vertebrae probably affected my posture which may have contributed to the ruptured disks. However, degenerative disc disease - not the extra vertebrae - was the primary reason for all my back problems.

I have an extra lumbar vertebrae as well. I didn't have any back pain until I started playing softball. Batting caused the pain to flare up. I have dealt with the pain. During softball I did therapy, physical therapy, they gave me certain excerises to do and stretches which helped. You just have to strengthen your lower back and keep it strong. If you don't, like I did then the pain comes and goes with certain movements. Also, I go to a chiropractor that uses torque release method, not popping bones and things, and that REALLY soothes my back and makes the pain go away. I hope this helps!

I have a sixth vertebra in the lower part of my back, and it hurts like heck. I worked as a waitress and due to the continual work and the extra pressure in my back ( due to the vertebra) i have seven discs in my back that rotate out of place and two in my neck that slide out. Here is my advice, take something called valerian root, its in the natural medicine part of Walmart. It doesn't take the pain away completely, but its a muscle relaxer that I have found helps ALOT!! do not ever lay on your stomach it just makes it worse. try sleeping on a heating pad. get one that shuts of after a while, it helps put me to sleep. Also you can try a tanning bed it helps relax and makes you feel better, atleast it does for me. I hope this helps.

My doctor does not recommend a chiropractor. He says they can make the problem worse. I also have an extra disk in the lower lumbar. I have been dealing with pain for about 15 years. My first MRI showed bulging disks in T 12, L4 and L5. My symtoms were dragging a foot(gone today) and pain when I was on my feet for about 10 minutes. If I sit down in about 10 minutes spine pulls apart and pain goes away. Walking hurts but if I have good support from shoes with good thick soles, it helps. The only pain medicine that releaves pain is like excederin extra strength or it's equivalent. They help get rid of inflammation. Pain killer only works for as long as it masks your pain. I just came from doctor. Now my C3,5, and I think 6 are giving me peoblems. I also have narrowing in the lower lumbar(spiral stenosis). Good luck. I think I will need surgery in the cervical neck region because my arms are going numb and I have to sleep in a recliner.

I've found yoga to be helpful as well. That's what got me thru my 20s. Now unfortunately because of other serious pelvic conditions, I'm unable to do much yoga anymore and have noticed it is making a big difference with my lumbarized S1 and sacroiliac pain.

I'm sorry. Some things we just don't have much control of. At least you learned of your limitation young enough to work on supportive muscles and can hopefully prevent worsening the condition. I didn't learn of it until the damage to other joints was far gone. There are really no "good" treatment options for me now. Good luck. Try to keep a good outlook and work on stretching and strengthing specific pelvic muscles. It will help.

I found out I had an extra vertebrae at the age of 14. The chiropractor told me it would tend to make my lower back weak . For the Christmas after my 18th birthday, my parents bought me an inversion table, which with regular use, keeps me out of the chiropractor office now, (except for major issues) whereas I used to have to go at least every other week before. But I use it a little different than you supposed to. Instead of laying on my back, I lay on my stomach and let myself go until I'm at maybe a 5 degree angle with my head down/feet up, and let my knees relax in the empty space. 5 minutes of this several times a week, and I can keep my spine stretched out so it doesn't bother me. Hope this helps someone else like it has me

Hi all. I had a car crash 4 months ago (someone rear ended me) and was told my back would be better in two weeks. To cut a long story short it didn't. I went for an MRI scan last week and then to the physio with results. She saw I have an extra disc like you guys. Its only the last two weeks I have been getting pain (not too bad) down my right hamstring. I have bulging discs L4/L5 on both sides of my back. Pain is bad at times and painkillers including codeine sometimes has no effect. I have had to change the positional way I sleep.

My question is will this go away in time or will it always be there? Should I consider surgery to get it removed or could this make things worse or is it pointless?

Should I look into Yoga/Pilates?

It is getting me down as I cant play soccer/gym/golf/lift my young kids etc. I have put on weight recently and I feel depressed and I am tired of it all now. I just want my old life back :-(
