Hi, My eyes are normally sore and burning for the whole time during my period. I normally start a day or two before, sometimes its that bad I cannot drive. Tried all types of eye drops and none work. Just been recommended to use Vitamin B6 and 12 to try and regulate my hormones. These are £1.00 for 60 in Morrisons, so will let you all know how I get on. Rach

I too am dealing with the frustration of being embarrassed to be at work, or outside of my house at all with these extremely uncomfortable red eyes. I think it is also tied to ovulation.

Get this.. I went to some 5 top opthamologists (sp) in Toronto sunnybrook, a really good optometrist and several GPs.. basically they don't really know, and called it blepharitis, which sounds to me after researching it that it is an umbrella term for "i dunno.." your eyelids are inflamed.. but they aren't really.

No eyedrops work, and it can be caused by anything really.. allergies, bacteria, virus, fungus. They ruled out bacterial, allergies is a maybe, but I don't suffer from any other allergies... anyway, I have a suspicion that it may be fungal, related to candida albicans.. that stuff is all about the itchy .. systemic candida is a nasty thing to try and recover from. I'm not sure if it is 100% this yet, but ya.. I also have a serious bout of endometriosis.. could be related to this like a previous poster mentioned. My periods are horendous, and i have to go for surgery soon. .. anyway, just thought I'd suggest a few things.. do an anti-inflammatory diet and see if it begins to help with anything... it has helped my periods to be less painful. All for now.

I don't know about the eye symtoms, but I have had migraines for years, some so bad that it felt like someone was drilling into my head. Nothing stopped the pain, not even narcotics. A specialist prescribed doxepin, which unfortunately I will probably be on for the rest of my life because if I stop the doxepin the drilling starts all over again. However, the med did stop the worst of the pain. Don't know if it would help the eye problem, but it might be worth looking into for the headaches.

I have the same thing right now and I know it's not allergies because it's the wrong season. I just did a search because it's driving me crazy and here, I see your post which describes the same symptoms. It's also my right eye. I might have it in the other but less severe but I only notice the right one. It feels just like allergies except I don't have any of the other accompanying symptoms like sneezing, post-nasal drip, coughing, itchy throat, etc. I'm peri-menopausal so there might be a hormone imbalance somewhere but I have no problems other than that. I'm probably up there with some athletes as far as the amount of muscle I have, and my lean vs. fat mass. I've been in the fitness profession for many, many years. In other words, I'm unusually fit and healthy so this isn't making any sense. I'll continue searching and return if I find anything.

There is something called menstrual migraines which usually happen during peri-menopause but can happen at anytime because it's an imbalance with Estrogen. I've actually read about this. You might want to do a Google search on "Menstrual Migraines."

Hi I too suffer from terribly sore red streaming eyes around during and just after my period. It's accompanied by a very painful headache. As yet I've not found anything that helps. I'm Convinced it must be hormone related. My skin dries out and becomes very crepoy too. Would going on the pill help ? I'm 41.

Looks like not much can be done about this from reading everyone's post's. I know when I am about to start my period as the day before my right eye becomes red and bloodshot. My sister get's the exact same thing so I just thought it was a genetic thing we had. Wish there was something that would stop this as it is annoying to have a re eye every month.

I had this symptom about a year ago.

It happens about a week before my period, although not every time. it's gone in about a day after it comes.

I have a very bad headache, blouted , very easy to get upset, swollen face and my whole body.

It's terrible. I feel fat, sick and grumpy.

It only happens on my left eye, not painful but feels like I have to close my eye to let it rest.

Frist I thought I might have herpes but I did a blood test before I had a baby and when I immgrated to Australia which was all clear.

I have a 6 year old daughter and I am 32 years old.

I am so glad to see someone having the same things happen.

We don't know what hormores can really do to us.

I will leave it to nature now unless it gets serious.

My eyes become red a few days before my period too. It causes slightly blurred vision and a slight headache. I initialy thought it might be relaed to Anemia since I have slight Anemia. I took iron pills and my Amemia is solved but my eye still continues to get red every month.

I am 47 and I have had this problem for about 3 years. I went to 2 eye drs and they didn't find anything wrong and diagnosed dry eye. I never thought to relate it to my menstrual cycle, but after reading these posts and just just getting off my cycle( including the red eyes getting back to normal) it all makes sense. I hate when my eyes get so res..I work with the public and it is so embarrassing. I have tried many different eye drops with no results. I would love to know what we can do to alleviate this problem. Frustrated.

I see this post is very old, but I believe I have finally figured out what this is. My eyes burned for a year and always way worse during PMS and after researching the internet for a year and being told incorrectly that it was an allergy by the eye doctor, I believe it is caused by systemic candida overgrowth. They have finally stopped burning now that I am on the anti-candida diet and anti-candida supplements.

I have the same issue. It's really painful. I've had this issue for about a year now. Today was very stressful so I bought clear eyes complete. It takes the redness away, but not the pain. I used some 88cent aspirin it helps, but not take the pain away.

I went through this for years. A few days before I'd get my period, it seemed I'd get allergies in my eyes. They were red, painful(as if glass were in them), watery and swollen. I wear contacts, so it was a nightmare. I'd be bed-bound for a good three days. My energy also completely disappeared, and I'd go into a near-coma state. It wasn't until my in-laws knew of someone who had experienced the same thing perimenopausally, that I sought treatment. I was put on estrogen and it stopped for quite some time. It is now(a year later) starting to return as I still have cycles(but not as frequent). Perhaps I need a higher estrogen dose? It's really weird and I couldn't function for a good six months prior to going on the estrogen. I had to stop working.
