After reading these blogs for the last two years it is quite interesting . There are a lot of similarities and overlaps as to what is going on .... I am not ruling out the possibility of hypo thyroidism as a possible predisposing factor..... The correlation of alcohol intake followed by various palpitations 3 to 4 hours afterwards, generally at night during sleep seems to be a common theme. Food intake and digestive issues also seems to play a role... The main concern for most these readers is what does this mean. As you know it’s not that simple .

Age, weight, hydration or there lack of plays a factor along a host of various other things... Most md’s can’t be bothered to figure or take the time to see was going on... and that’s understandable ..... because this is alcohol induced. If you stop drinking the problem goes away .

So this all has to do with body and the way it interacts with alcohol… And the side effects.

Hydration along with food intake prior to alcohol consumption will help… But there is more to this

Hello, I’m just following up on this issue that you have or hopefully had, assuming you found the reason and cure. I go have the same exact episodes after drinking and they didn’t happen before. Do you still have this issue?

Has anyone  else noticed the increase happening almost immediately (less than 30 minutes) after starting to drink?

I’m sooooooo glad I ran across these responses!! I’ve been dealing with this for the past 6 months! I’m 37, work out 4-5 times a week and at a normal weight. It was as if a switch flipped and insomnia started. I had several drinks for my bday and have not been able to sleep well since. I noticed my heart racing and the night sweats but thinking I was dealing with insomnia started doing things to help me sleep and on desparate occasions turned to wine. I’ve been to 3 drs all telling me everything is fine and I just have anxiety. Looks like no one has answers in why but so glad to see there are others dealing with the same issue! Finally putting it together that alcohol is the culprit

Clearly you have no idea what your talking about. I am an alcoholic and I will not or have someone BS.

You don't need to drink every day you don't need too want it so much you could actually walk out on your life?

Want to leave your own head so much from pre and then post partim depression that I'm still wondering if I'm good enough cos my mother never was and am I?

I feel a lot better after reading all these posts. I have been experiencing this fast heart rate after a night of drinking. I’m only talking 2-3 glasses of red wine. Last night was particularly scary because my I woke up after 4 hours with my heart pumping out of my chest!! I tried breathing excercises but it wasn’t working so I drank 2 big glasses of water and had a chamomile tea. Finally after 30 minutes my heart got back to almost normal. I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. At least I know I’m not alone. I guess I have to just have 1 glass of wine because 1 doesn’t effect me. Kinda stinks

I have the same issues with heart rate and even the smallest amount of alcohol. I think the reaction falls under the diagnosis of "holiday heart" or sinus tachycardia. If you look these up, you will probably identify with the conditions.

From one study in Germany:
Conclusions
Acute alcohol consumption is associated with cardiac arrhythmias and sinus tachycardia in particular. This partly reflects autonomic imbalance as assessed by significantly reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Such imbalance might lead to sympathetically triggered atrial fibrillation resembling the holiday heart syndrome.

My story,

I am 37 and have been an occasional wine drinker for 7 years. A couple months ago out of the blue my heart rate increased HOURS AFTER my glass(s) of wine. (I only drink wine)

It started with one episode. Then I would have some wine again with no episode. Now each time I try to have wine this heart rate increase happens. It’s not super high but just hovers around 80-100 bpm resting. I am not having huge amounts of alcohol. We are talking one 5 ounce glass of wine will do this. What is this?? Is that it? I can never have wine again!!

Following this long chain, I'm noticing there are 2 groups of people: some are complaining about the effects after 5,6,7 drinks. This is quite a heavy load on the body and I think quite normal to have problems.

The other group is like myself: only having 1 or 2 drinks in the evening (6pm ish) will prevent me from being able to get to sleep at 10/11pm. Like others, this is a NEW problem that I've never experienced before. Many people here are bummed that they can't drink at all now, but MY question is how do you feel when you have a drink in the afternoon? I never notice a problem with a drink or two at that time.

Hello all! After much research I want to tell you all my experience with this so far. I have come to learn that this is a histamine intolerance/imbalance. I have leaky gut which is undiagnosed but I have stomach issues that are not debilitating but they are there. I also have low DAO levels and alcohol inhibits this enzyme on top of it being low. The reason that it comes on later vs right away which we would see in an allergic reaction is because histamine fills up so to speak. It fluctuates all the time and foods high in histamine if foods that create high histamine that is created by ones own body will cause a reaction in those with histamine intolerances. I do not know if this is happening to each one of you but it’s why I’m experiencing this. It’s hard for me to accept that I can never have a glass of wine or an alcoholic beverage again so I’m trying to heal my gut to heal my histamine intolerance in hopes of eventually enjoying some wine again in the future. I will keep you all posted.

This started happening to me and what I have done, which has helped me almost every single time is magnesium and calcium or just magnesium alone, the water dissoluble kind. Also, if it feels worse I do a couple of acupressure points one for the heart (P6) and the other one for the liver (LV3) for a couple of minutes each and usually goes away. Also sometimes I take Hawthorn extract and Milk Thistle as well, which also seems to help. Based on my experience, this is cause by the liver and not by the heart. I am not a doctor and this is based on my observations and research.

I have not read all of these posts but a good amount. I'm 39 , athletic as well, gym 3 days a week plus a very physical job.
I noticed it 6-8 years ago. I did use to drink heavily 20s-early 30s , i just has a hihj tolerance. I started waking up at 2 am on the dot. I mean every time 2am! Heart pounding fast, hot...bp is cranking.
I had cut back to 2 days a week, really all my work schedule will allow anyway, still get it in a mild form after 1 or two drinks.
It is not a generic thing, I have friends, neighbors much older who party through the whole weekend and alcohol does not do this to them. They wake up late and have a headache.

I have noticed as me and my wife vacation and cruise a lot, sometimes twice a year; I drink at nights while on vacation, a lot too, and I do not have the issues . It is weird. Like all the stress of things you need to do or surrounding of your home cause anxiety along with the alcohol consumption.
There is no certain type, I use to drink all beer and thought it was my body dealing with carbs/ sugar. Quit beer almost all together for 5 months and drink whiskey and ginger ale , same thing happens. Only happens when I sleep. Like I said , out of a panic , wake up 2 am. Thoughts racing on how many drinks I had, conversations you had with friends while drinking ect.... sucks
Had a friend tell me that bp meds fix this issue but have not get on any as I do border pre hypertension.
I take 500 mg of magnesium through the week .
Every one should realize that sooooo many people have this and we are not alone so do not fret the worst.
I also have IBS for years as well.
