I turned 65 - 18 months ago and my finger tips began to get hard then crack and split. I have tried many many different creams and recommendations. I found '3M Tegaderm -hydrocolloid dressing' cut in 3/4" squares applied to the tip covered with thin breathable surgical tape for 24 to 36 hours completely healed the split, nothing else heals so quickly. But within a week or 10 days the tips crack again and I start again, this happens to 8 finger tips. Creams, suave, and lotions help but no cure. 3 weeks ago I bought a homemade cream, coco & coconut butters, 2 nut oils, & vitamin E. I applied every day for 2 weeks and my skin is totally almost back to normal, no splits since I started using it. I'm not sure what did it but I am a believer but have no access to the same cream. I decided I need to make my own. Seems Vitamin E combined with C, may also have good results.

Maybe it's vitamin C deficiency.

Has anyone ever found out what it is and what to do for it? I started having the problem last August and the dermatologist says its eczema bu treatment only works as long as I stay on steroids and clobetasol perscription which is expensive.

My allergist gave me a cream called Vitacream, its ok but not really helping, he put me on singular also, he says its hand excema..I just read that if you put your hands in spring water with alittle white vinegar and soak for 10 minutes it may help, it will also help on your feet...Gonna try it tonight, I am desperate, my fingers are killing me

I get this exact same problem of skin coming away (like in a small triangle) at the corner of my nails. Had it years.
White Willow Bark Tablets help reduce the symptoms.
Serrapeptase helps with this - reduces symptoms even better than white willow bark. Though you have to take it on an empty stomach, with water, and allow the tablet to pass through your stomach before eating (Stomach acid can kill the serrapeptasse)
Something that also helped a great deal, was giving up caffeine coffee, I only have 1 cup of decaf a day, this has had the best affect on my hands, and no more than 1 cup of normal tea per day.
using rubber gloves when washing and cleaning at home, is also important.
With all the above, all things being equal, my problem cleared away and stayed away for several years.
Though I would like to know if there is a name for this - it is strange that it affects only the skin by the nails (though I do also get some general chapping of the hands as well)

I been having the same problem for the last 2 years of hard, dry, cracked fingertips, especially on my thumbs and index fingers. I was given a cream from my dermatologist, but it has not helped. I am just wondering if anyone has noticed this condition on their fingertips since they started having a smartphone. I think my problem is caused by swiping the screen of my smartphone. Can anyone else contribute their condition to the screen of their smartphone?

I have the same problem with my fingertips and was wondering if you started having this since you had a smartphone. I really think that swiping my smartphone is what is causing this. I think I have some kind of allergic reaction to the screen of my smarphone.

Just another insight - I swim laps in our outdoor swimming pool every other day - been doing it for 10 years - and I have the cracked fingertip syndrome all the time. It so bad now that, for the first time, I am making an appointment with my doctor. I only wish that pool chlorine would help my fingertips heal!
