Hello everyone, I'm disappointed. I read so much about the freestyle insulinx monitor, I went out and bought one. I guess I didn't read enough. Apparently you need a calculator code to set up the calculator part. Well I went to my diabetes manages to see if she knew the code and she tells me she doesn't. The ones in Europe are supposed to come with a code in the leaflet. Did they forget that part for us in the U.S. I don't know what to do at this point except go back to my old system. Is there a way around this problem?

Hi, I'm to understand that Abbott (the maker) has provided the calculator code to healthcare professionals only. The Freestyle Insulinx calculator requires understanding of the use of insulin and patients need advice from their healthcare people before they can use it. That's what they say anyway. It seems to me that you would know about insulin if you are already taking it so what are they talking about. According to Abbott, only professionals can set up and change the insulin calculator settings.
But, what I understand is that the U.S. version doesn't come with the insulin calculator built in so even if you had a code it wouldn't do you any good. The calculator is supposed to be able to crunch insulin-to-carb ratios, calculate correction factors and can actively track insulin. This is like a pump without the pump. But, why is the U.S. monitor missing the calculator part? According to Abbott “The availability of certain functions in our products in different geographies reflects the local needs and environment”. It's anyone's guess as to what that means.
Nevertheless, diabetics in Europe are loving the monitor and swear by it. Many say they have been able to prevent a number of hypos. Perhaps in the future they will put the calculator in the U.S. version but for now we are out of luck.
