I'm on week three and the taste is horrendous everything I eat I throw up later I've pretty much given up on eating and on top of it I'm getting sick so I'm hoping the stuffy nose makes all taste go away for a while. However, mom had hers out when she was 21 and she doesn't recall ever having a funny taste afterwards so I assume you either get used to it or it does go away.

I had my tonsils removed on the 5th of June at the Royal London Hospital, It was an afternoon op and I was too drugged to be discharged to be sent home. I was discharged the following morning with painkillers but NO antibiotics. Day 2-3 were not so bad but I was constipated as I was on codine. Day 4 had the most terrifying experience ever. At about 4.30pm i had a bleed from the left side of the throat. Blood was literally gushing out from my mouth and going down into my stomach. Went to the A&E by ambulance and was kept in the resus room till 11pm when it was time for my turn to go in for ANOTHER op to stop the bleeding. My bleeding had not stopped by then and blood pressure was high and heart beating at 150. At 10.30 i eventually passed out after my heart beat went upto 170. That is when they decided I need to go into surgery and I was now a priority. All this time i was not on top of their list as priority as there had been 2 other patients bought in with severe injuries (one that decided to jump infront of a train and the other had been stabbed three times).

Anyhow I was taken into surgery at 11pm and was in the recovery room at around 1.30am when I started coming back round. the surgeon came and explained he could not stop the bleed by burning the area so had to tie a knot on the vein. I was discharged from hospital that evening with antibiotics and tramodine which I found being a really effective pain killer. I am 3 weeks post my initial op and 2 & a half week since the second op and have had no bleed since.
The pain was worst during days 6-12. Now the pain is near enough gone however at times i feel food does get stuck where my tonsils were and saliva feels wierd to swallow. Food does not taste the the same and I am hoping this changes soon. Over the past 3 weeks I have lost 10kg on the positive side.

Sorry for the long essay.

I'm here to inform you I got mine out three weeks ago and the taste has been disgusting just a few days ago it was to the point where I was depressed and just would forgo eating. However, I have been eating everything in sight since. I got stomach meds to calm my upset stomach from the taste and I've stopped taking them now and can eat everything as normal and I can tell my taste is coming back. I think the key is: the more you eat the more taste you gain back.

And as for the food getting stuck back there that's super normal your tonsils help push food down your throat and now that you don't have them there is just a big swollen empty space for food to get stuck and trapped in. Make sure you're drinking lots of water to was everything down.

I'm six weeks post-tonsillectomy and I'm FINALLY starting to taste food normally once again! I'd say I'm about 85% back to normal. Before this week, half of my tongue was tasting food normally, and the other half was tasting food abnormally. Also, I felt like i couldn't taste anything on the very back of my tongue. On the abnormal side, food tasted sour/off, sort of metalic like. It was gross. I tried eating on one side (the normal side), but when food slipped over to the other side, I'd be done with my meal.

I saw my ENT earlier last week hoping he'd have good news about tasting troubles. Both he and the nurse said its completely normal and everything usually returns to normal by the end of the 2nd month. While if felt good that they knew of this type of situation and even had a time-frame for me, I still didn't think my tongue was going to get better by my two month mark. I hadn't noticed any progress... Until this week!!!!

Over the weekend, I reluctantly went out for dinner with the missus (no fun eating and spending money on food that you can't enjoy). I decided to go ahead and order my favorite seafood salad that I KNEW wouldn't taste right as I had tried it early on in my post-tonsillectomy weeks. Not sure why I ordered it (perhaps deep down, I had a little hope), but after few bites, I realized that it didn't taste as off as I had expected. Was I getting better?!?! Sure enough, today is 4 days later, and the off-taste is ALMOST gone!! Finally the end is in sight!! I was so surprised at how fast it healed all of a sudden in this past 4 days.

I read somewhere that taking zinc supplements for a whole month might help. I've been taking them for the past 3 weeks (15mg a day type pills). I really have no clue if these supplements have helped any, but I thought I'd mention it.

Also, I was having trouble swallowing and that seems to be getting better slowly, but surely, as well.

Stay strong!! You can do it!

I am a week and a half out of surgery and almost all dairy foods taste sour and sweet foods taste just off. I don't know how to explain it but my sense of taste is definitely not what it used to be. Hopefully it gets back to normals sometime soon! I haven't been able to eat ice cream, pudding or cake because of the terrible taste. Best of luck to everyone else recovering!

I’m 15 and it’s now been 4 days since my tonsillectomy. Everything tasted normal apart from today. I had turkey burgers and chips. The turkey burgers had a weird taste but the chips tasted fine. I ate some maoam sweets and they tasted horrible. Haven’t yet tried fizzy drinks. Hopefully they’ll be tasting the same soon.
