I was terrified when 3 days after my surgery everything tasted bland or gross. My girlfriend made me my mom's flan recipe. But one bite was all I could muster. The custard was bland, the caramel bitter. Then I remembered something my doctor said: "most people lose their sense of tasting sweet after the surgery, but it's temporary. It always comes back."

One week on, most things still tasted weird. And I still had trouble tasting ANYTHING sweet other than liquids, like Gatorade or egg nog. Eventually, however, things got better. By my two week post-op, I had recovered most of my sense of taste. Meats, cheese, wine, etc., all tasted normal. McDonald's french fries tasted divine! And by now, almost one month from the surgery, even sweet tasting things are starting to come back. For some reason, I can taste sweets normally everywhere in my mouth but the back-right side of the throat. It's as if when sugary things touch this area of the throat, my saliva glands release something vile. If I must, I can just chew on the left side of the throat. It's improving though. I can almost eat sweets with abandon (not sure that's a good thing!)

In any event, to be positive to all the patients out there googling this and stumbling on this thread: my doctor, who is one of the top ENT surgeons in Chicago, if not the country, said that in his 32 years performing the surgery not a single patient has failed to recover their sense of taste entirely. Most recover it in a month or two. He has seen as long as 8 months, but he said that was just one patient in probably thousands.

Hi Christopher, this is so enlightening to hear. I am 6 months po and I have intermittent metallic/sour/sweet taste in the back of my throat and a bit of tingling too. Chocolate is bland still and coke is starting to get back to normal but this annoying disgusting taste is still present and very depressing. One day I feel good another day I have this lingering taste in my kouth. I can't taste savory foods thay I love like curry and coffee is still not the same. Did you also have this problem?

Age: 67 Tonsillectomy was 7 months ago. My sense of taste is still all messed up. NOTHING tastes as it used to. Nothing actually tastes good. My favorites: chocolate, watermelon, ice cream, all actually taste bad now. Many other foods have varying degrees of a bad aftertaste as I'm eating. It's miserable not being able to truly enjoy a meal anymore. Still praying my sense of taste eventually gets back to normal.

I am 47 and had my tonsils removed June 30, 2021. I am still having issues with foods not tasting right. It’s awful! I can eat things that have strong spices but all sweets taste funny and even French fries taste funny. I can’t even enjoy a cup of coffee.
