I'm not a doctor but I'll toss out what I know just since I see this is becoming an old post.
You do need to be weaned off of prednisone. It can be done safely, it will take some time though. Your adrenal glands will need some time to begin making the hormone.
I would expect that at some point you'd have some blood tests to determine how well they're functioning.
