It is so good to read that I am not alone in my suffering.
I have started recently (in the last 2 months) to get these symptoms of a pressure on my windpipe. It feels like somebody has their finger pushing it and I am suffocating. Like most it is bearable in the morning but by bedtime it is awful and I end up so agitated. It makes me feel sick and i keep burping. The doctor prescribed me Lansoprazole but this didn't do anything. I have had a chest x ray and blood test but am awaiting the result. I am also booked in for an ultrasound of my neck and an endoscopy. I just wish i knew what was wrong you get so many things go through your mind. Again like some others hot drinks relieve it for a while but it soon comes back. Do any of you have to keep swallowing and do any of you have trouble sleeping on your side? This seems to be worse than lying on my back? Any comments appreciated

I have just recently (in the past few days) started getting the kind of pressure you have described. It feels like someone is pressing a finger into my throat just above the sternum and below the adams apple. It is painful and feels like i am choking. It started during a severe sore throat and larangitis that I have been enduring these past few days. I do not have insurance so I cant see a doc about it but if anyone finds out what this is, please let us know.

I have had the same for about a month now, I thought it was sinus related but when thinking about it, it really feels like someone has their hand wrapped around your throat and is squeezing it! So therefore I recon it is muscular, that being tightened neck muscles. Most likely due to stress. I found if I gently stretched out my neck, especially the muscles that feel like they join from either side of your chin down to your shoulder almost, it makes for great relief. That could explain why in the mornings it doesnt feel no where near as bad cause the neck muscles have had the night to relax!!

From what a lot of you have said the lump in the throat feeling is most likely a Cricopharyngeal spasm!!!!

I do agree about a support group. It would be nice to have a panel to go through all of these concerns and speak to some medical doctors/nurses{maybe retirees} that could assist us in knowing more about our health. Of course they tell you the do's and the dont's about what you should do about your health, but what about the unknowns? When I view this site, it's just so amazing to see that a lot of us are not alone, but we want and NEED some answers. It's kind of funny that there are so may of us that are looking for answers. It's a shame that you have doctors that has gone through med school and we look for the advice from them. Most of the times I find so much from the people who post than I do from my own physician. Actually I like this post because there are questions that I can take notes from to ask my doctor. I think we need to propose a plan and get started in helping our posters. What do you all think?

my health history is much like yours. shortness of breath, tight neck, out of control feeling, adrenaline rush, panic attacks...the works. doctor after doctor....anxiety was the only result. i order a curriculum called the Linden Method. look it up. it has helped alot. your symptoms sound like thy are very much anxiety related. though it feels like something much worse is wrong. i hope you find the curriculum as wonderful has i have. better than any medicine they had me on.

i am so desperate for an answer about the way i am feeling about this lump in my throat. i am very glad to have found these posts and find them very useful. i searched Cricopharyngeal Spasm and found the symptoms very acurate. this is the second time i have experienced about this "strangling/choking" feeling and i thought omg i'm gonna die. lol. i was even rushed to the hospital because i thought i was going to have a heart attack or something. they diagnosed me with panic attack and gave me pills which i never even used. that is because when i was in the hospital for about 2 hours (scanning, xrays, blood tests, etc), the tightness on my throat became okay. i was really embarassed and the staff was kind of giving me a funny look. i spent a lot of $$$ just for the tests. but just now, it happened to me again i was so afraid again. i googled panic attack and i don't think that is what i am suffering about. i then searched Cricopharyngeal Spasm and BINGO! now i know what to tell the doctor when i go see him tomorrow at the hospital. i just wish i have a temporary remedy for this thing that's giving me a hard time right now. i will try warm tea, just like what one of you advised. thanks for this swell topic. loved it.

I've been feeling the tightness for about 4 days steady. before that it would be an occasional fleeting feeling.. then one day it just came on full force. I haven't been to the doctor yet (no health insurance, thanks Walmart for being such a crappy company), but i've been treating it like an ear infection... it's only in the right side, usually worse in the evening, sometimes I dont even notice it, unless I start thinking about it, then it comes on full force again. It tends to make me have panic attacks because suddenly I'm scared I wont be able to breathe. I have been under a lot of stress lately, but that is no different from any other day. Only difference is, sometimes my ear does hurt, and my sinuses are draining. It's that "gotta burp" feeling, only on one side of my throat. Surely there has to be SOMEONE out there who can help us?

I can relate. 18 years old, and after alot of stress I've developed several physical symptoms. My throat feels tight constantly like I can't breathe enough, but my oxygen and lung capacity are optimal. The tightness feels harsh, like a grip on the trachia or something along those lines. I get panic "fits" (can't really call them attacks as they last hours, but seem controllable) due to it, and even run into other issues such as random numbness in the hands and fingers. I thought it was something serious, but lack of sleep, drinking and smoking seemed to be the main issues. Then I was told of the plethoria of problems assosciated with stress.
Sorry if the English is bad, I've only been using the language within the last 5 years.

Getting back to the original topic, I have an enlarged thyroid caused by Hashimotos disease. It is only moderately enlarged, but it does seem to cause me some problems breathing and swallowing. I have also had a stiff weak feeling neck, worse later in the day. I am scheduled to get another ultrasound soon to see if the thyroid is getting bigger, but also probably a blood test to see what my calcium level is in my blood. It turns out a parathyroid, (four smaller glands in your neck) can enlarge and get stuck in the "on" mode and produce hormone that takes calcium from your bones at an abnormal level. Go to a parathyroidism web site and read the symptoms, they are similar to what many here write about and maybe get yourself checked. Who knows, there are many things that can cause similar symptoms but is sounds like some of you might have had this overlooked as something to be cleared from the list. Do research and help your doctors, they are overloaded and it is hard to for them to catch everything in the short time they have sometimes.

Hi,
Try changing the pillow you use or possibly with some of you the bed too. Sounds strange and I think it is, but the pillow works for me. If you have a bed you are sharing, try switching sides or spin the mattress around. Also an aspirin or two should help relieve the pressure feeling.
