Hiya,
Like most of you, I googled and founds this site.
My symptoms are:
- Choking sensation, like you're upsidedown
- lump in the throat, like something's stuck and does not go away. It's worse in the evenings, in the morning I'm usually ok. It's very frustrating, I tend to clear my throat a lot, to try and get rid of it, but no chance.
It disappears when I eat and drink, but then it comes back again.
I went to a doctor who told me to get my tyroid examined, and also gave me some medication for sinus infection. According to her, because I suffer from sinus, the mucous tends to accumulate in the back of your throat and cause an inflammation of the throat, which can also be a cause for that sensation.
I do hope I manage to figure what this is all about. If it's acid reflux, are you supposed to feel it, or does the acid never reach your mouth?
I'm not sure about that. It could well be acid reflux.
After reading all your anwers, i decided to try and avoid coffee, chocolate, tomato sauce, and anything that may cause acid reflux.
Like many of you, I spend all day at the computer, working and i too suffer frrom neck problems.
Could all this be related?
It's good to be able to have a place to discuss this. For long I though I was craxy, nobody seemed to understand what I am going through.
It comes and goes. Sometimes, a couple of months go by and I'm perfectly ok, other times, it goes on for months on end.
Do any of you ever feel actual spams on the throat, like a contraction within it?
Thanks for your help.

i have been having a tightness/discomfort under the jaw around up to my neck and down to my adams apple. this discomfort is more noticable during the eveing hours. this sensatition began with my intake of loteral to control my high blood pressure. shortly after that noticing the discomfort i did consult with the dr. that presicribe the medication and he indicated that there was nothing wrong ( his conclusion was just from a routine dr.s visit.... this dr. has since closed his office locally and has moved away. unfortunely, i do not have medical insurance therefore i have had no further test done. if anyone can relate to this please let me
know what you have been dx with or what you have done to help relieve this sypmtoms.

Hey, I've just been reading some of your posts...
I'm a 27 year old, vey healthy woman. For about a year now I've had this pressure in my neck, with constant daily headaches. They began after I exercised, and it's like my body never 'cooled down'. Both get worse when I exercise, it feels like my upper body's going to explode. The headaches are also much worse after I eat/or overeat, and when I lay down, at night. I went for heart tests, and had an ultrasound of my neck, and they're normal. I went to my neurologist (I'm an epileptic, who hasn't taken a seizure in 7 years, and am on no meds), he diagnosed me with Chronic Tension Headaches, of which the symptoms do fit. I've been seeing a massage therapist, which releases tension a little, and a chiropractor for active release technique. However, the pressure and damned irritation is constant, and I can't perform even moderate physical activity. I'm going for an MRI, and have been referred to a physciatrist, as well as an Ear Nose & Throat specialist. I'm trying to pin this thing down. So, I feel for everyone going through this type of thing- it affects every aspect of your life, you can't get away from it, and it's taken so much from me. I wish everyone the best

I read your post and can feel for you. I started having the pressure in my throat and neck. I wheeze in my neck and I am exhausted. I feel like someone has a large rubber bad around my neck every minute of the day lowering my ability to breathe correctly. I am really set into a wheezing attack with strong odors. I ended up in the hospital, because my lungs had swollen almost completely shut. I was diagnosed with Asthma, which between you and I, I don't have, nor have ever had. I too was checked for everything, but they kept ignoring the pressure in my neck. I can't get anyone to pay attention to it, they just overlook it everytime I complain about my neck. They exrayed, MRI, Cat scaned, Ultrasounded everything and it all looks good. They put me on allergy meds and all kinds of asthma meds, nothing helps. I know you are frustrated. Me too!

I am so glad to hear that I am not alone with this symptom, although, quite literally, I feel your pain. I too suffer from this neck pressure. It came on gradually, but now is certainly full fledged. If feels like someone has their hand around the middle of my throat, and is squeezing it. It seems to be worse when I am sitting, although it could be the fact that I have more time to notice it. Sometimes it seems unbearable.
My doctor conducted a series of thyroid tests, because I have a history of thyroid problems. However, the results came back negative. He said that he thinks it is an inflamation of the thyroid, and gave me pills to speed up the flow of thyroid to the neck, which should ease the swelling. So far I have taken the pills for two days, and no visible results. However, it may take time to be effective.
Also, with the pressure, I have been extremely tired lately. I am not an athletic person, but am in decent shape, and have not been strenuously exerting myself, and have been getting at least 7 hrs. of sleep a night. I am not sure if the two are related, but my doctor said it might be because of a sluggish thyroid. Who knows, he's the doc., not me. Anyways, any feedback from this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all im so happy i found this i feel like my life's not so badly in danger anymore. i had the same thing last night it started at about 12am. Its very scary it made feel sick as well as anxious.
its eased off a bit today but its still there a little, i haven't a clue what it is but i have some theories as to how its appeared them being stress, lack of rest, singing to much lol, smoking and anxiety problems.
They are all the things that i have experienced and the way my lifestyle is, so i suppose i need to see a doctor if the problem persists or gets worse and in the mean time just take it easy and relax more and cut smoking out.

Glad I came across this and am not the only one experiencing these exact symptoms for the past 3 years. I'm only 22 years old....I pray it goes away. I will pray for you all as well.....keeping the post alive so people know that they aren't alone. I have been to the ENT 5 times and he prescribes me all types of allergy and acid reflux medicines...? I wish we just knew exactly what causes it...

Please go to a doctor if you are having sore legs and feet, not able to stand for very long at a time, tiredness, rapid heartbeat or pulse, out of breath, pressure in your ears, and if you are hearing thumping or your heartbeat in your ears constantly or occasionally. These are symptoms of high blood pressure.
Your blood pressure can be reduced easily by excercising at least 30 minutes a day, and by trying to eliminate as much salt as you can from your diet. Eat more fruits and fresh vegetables in place of canned or processed foods. Use spices to season your foods instead of salt. Check the sodium content on all of the foods that you eat. Are you going over the recommended daily intake? If so, that is bad for your health and you are damaging your body. Once you have high blood pressure you usually can't reverse the damage and you will probably be on medications for the rest of your life.

ok so i had a tight throat feeling for about 6 months. The situation was sort of the same, i was put on advair for asma, that didnt help. Zyrtec to deal with POTENTIAL ALlergies, nuthing. Nothing would get rid of this trouble. The way to describe it would be like a hand inside my throat pulling on my muscles from the inside, making it hard to breath.
than, i smoked marijuana for my 4th time in my whole life. It was the first time since i had been having this problem. IT COMPLETELY WENT AWAY. it even stayed loose" a while after the effects of the pot wore off. It's not reccomended to smoke with this sort of problem, but it really worked. I'm thinking about getting a cannabis card, so i can ingest my new cure instead of smoking it. BUT THIS REALLY HELPS ME.
u should consider it as an lternative to your medication right now, or maybe a cure if nuthin worx

Okay so I have been having this problem for a few weeks but I would only be having these throat problems after smoking marijuana. I have been smoking marijuana for medical reasons for 2 years and have not had anything. Today I was sitting at my desk and I was reading it was post-stress related issue. so as my throat is tight I put my hand on my neck and started massaging my neck. after about 2 min. I released my hand and I was able to take a nice few breaths of a untight throat. after only 3min or so my throat feels fine. please try it and reply back!

Hi All,
I am waiting for my blood work results and I have been stressing about this for 2 months I feel like both sides of my neck are really heavy and being pulled down from my ear to shoulder on both sides. It is a terrible feeling and all kinds of things have been running through my mind, like cancer. I came across this website and read all your statements and I feel much better that I am not the only one feeling this way. Has anyone found anything out from their doctors?
Thanks,
Cathy

Hi Cathy,
You will be fine - I had it for months, about a year or so ago - I thought the worst to. It turns out it is a 'Cricopharyngeal spasm' and I believe brought on by some kind of virus although I didn't have any cold or flu symptoms with it I recall having cold symtoms about a month or so earlier before I got it. I suffered alot of sinus and thought it was that to... I took multivitamins and calcuim tablets for weeks and one day I noticed that I didn't have it anymore. A few months later my friend got the same thing and it took a few months before the throat pulling left her to. I remember I used to stretch my neck out heaps left and right and that made it feel alot better - it was usually worse in the evenings, mornings were better if I remember right. Anyway I am on the other side of it all and you will be too, chin up don't let it get the better of you and make sure you eat and drink well - there is a light at the end of the tunnel! You will be back on here reasuring other people like I am for you!
Cheers

I am in the same boat you are. I have had the feeling in my throat for almost 8 months. I have learned to live with it so far. I have panic attacks sometimes because it gets so intense. I have had the mri's, ct scans the beruim swallow....all like you. I even had ultrasounds done on neck and gall bladder everything. I am at a lost. The feeling in my throat feels like pressure..Like something could be laying on it just a wee bit....like its closing but I know its not. I get a little flushed and swallowing is very uncomfortable sometimes.....when I think about it. My chest gets a little tight or maybe....i am not sure what the right word is.....just uncomfortable....buts it is my throat. I do have a drs appt tomorrow with someone completely different to see if maybe there is hope.
