hiccups after cortisone shots

EVERY time I have a cortisone shot I get uncontrollable hiccups within a few hours. Sometimes it lasts for several days.
I've tried all the usual cures, sugar on tongue, drinking water, holding air, breathing in a bag. NOTHING works. Any suggestions.
I got a shot in the shoulder yesterday at 2PM, by 5 PM they started, and today they are worse.
ANY SUGGESTIONS to stop this side effect???? :?

my hubby got the hiccups about 4 hours after his cortisone shot. It's been disruptive and concerning. We found his short term, yet very effective, solution is eating or making love. Seriously, no lie. Really. We do hope his reaction will stop soon.

My husband had been hiccupping for half a day and was miserable after steroid injections in both shoulders yesterday. Just tried the Qtips up the nostrils and it worked!! (At least for 10 minutes now.) Thank you so much for the suggestion.

I just had a cortisone shot around 10 am because i had knee surgery and the next morning around 11am the hiccups started. Been dealing with them for 8 hours now...never getting this shot again.
Hi there one economist, I am not sure if this is going to be any help to you but I am exactly the same, any sedation or cortisone sets me going for about 3 days and I get quite an upset stomach with all the air. I recently started doing the Manuka honey/ Apple Cider Vinegar thing for an arthritic condition and one of the adjustments I was advised to do was add in 1/2 a tsp of baking soda to neutralise the bodies PH. I had the thought this time that maybe the cortisone upsets the acidity so I have doubled up on the drink 2-3 (and obviously the baking soda content goes up proportionally) times a day and I think the hiccups are much better (not gone completely) but clearly less ( one good one every 1/2 hour) 2tbls organic app cider vinegar, 1tsp Manuka honey, melt in large glass with a small amount of boiling water. Add (gently as it fizzes) 1/2 tsp baking soda mix until it stops fizzing and then fill the glass with cold filtered water. Not overly pleasant but tolerable. If you do try..... Good luck, hope it works for you. Cheers Rich
I had epidural cortisone shots in my spine twice in 2003, 2005 plus a knee injection in 2004 and I was fine afterwards. However, I got the spine shots in 2009 and developed horrible acid re-flux and hiccups that lasted about 3-4 days. I called the dr office and they said it is a rare side effect and I should eat very little at a time.
Then in 2010 I got another knee injection and the same thing happened. I got an injection yesterday and in less than 24 hours, hiccups started. I didn't eat much yesterday, but I had a breakfast this morning and it caused lots burps and eventually hiccups. So I am going to try to eat as less as possible.
This is definitely a drug side effect but since I didn't have them before, I believe that it maybe due to some change in the manufacturing of the cortisone; maybe a new additive or something... I am going to get some cue tips and try it out. But to my experience, the only thing that resolves it is for the drug to wear off in a few days.
Glad I found this forum. I had an injection yesterday at 4 and hiccups started at 9 this morning. Couldn't figure it out until reading the posts. I've had 3 breaks of 15-30 mins each today. A couple of remedies were short fixes. I had a tablespoon of peanut butter about an hour ago and it's working. We'll see. Hope it's the end of them.
I've had the hiccup for15 hours. I tried the qutipup, the nostril and it worked.
Same deal for me. 12 hours after a shot in my knee, hiccups started, woke me up and did not stop. I read this site and, out of desperation, shoved a Q-Tip up my nose. Now at 1/2 hour with no hics. Can't believe it! but there's no denying it worked.
I had a cortisone in my shoulder and the next day I had 9 instances of hiccups. I searched this board and the most permanent solution was the Q tip in the nostril posted by someone in this thread. Whew - it was an exhausting ordeal.
I got a shot of cortisone in the hand yesterday as well, and within an hour or so the hiccups arrived. This also happened a year ago when I got a shot in the knee. At first, drinking water helped, but later the hiccups returned. It only lasted a day or so then went away. I don't remember, but I think it lasted a couple of days.
You are a lifesaver! I had a cortisone shot yesterday and spent part of yesterday and all of today with agonizing hiccups. Nothing stopped them but the q-tips up the nose. It worked within a few seconds and I've had a glorious 10-minutes hiccup free since! Thank you! This is one cheap solution I'd never heard of and never would have guessed on my own.
It worked wowwwwww
Just got a Cortisone shot two days ago with the same result. Thorazine also was recommended worked great after 12 hours
