I broke my femur above my knee replacement. I had a hard cast on for 4 1/2 weeks and a brace for 2 1/2 weeks. I am now allowed to put weight on the fractured leg. I am wondering if it is normal for my foot to hurt when I put weight on it. How long will this last? Thanks

Hi hon! Due to the fact that you have had NO pressure on your foot for 7 weeks, your muscles would have attrophied - thus the pain! And the unusual sensation - that your foot finally feels - is also adding to this pain,
If you can, have someone GENTLY massage your feet - especially your insole - where the majority of your muscles are, stretching them out, by putting their thumb on the base of your foot and sliding it firmly down towards your toes! Also putting both hands around your foot and massage oil into them. A good oil is olive oil - about 2 tablespoons, with about 5 drops of lavendar oil - you can get alot of these from healthfood stores, or even your local pharmacy! Also another thing - IF you have a foot spa - GREAT!!! - if you don't get a dish bowl and fill it with VERY warm water, put 2 cups of Epsom Salts and about 5 drops of Lavender oil in the water! Let your feet soak in there - to loosen up the muscles!
Another GREAT thing is after your feet are warmed up, put a towel on the floor, put your feet ontop of it and try to wrinkle the towel with your toes, as though you're trying to pick it up - does' this make sense?!!! Run your feet over a can or a bottle, or a large smooth stone, anything to get those muscles warmed up and moving! You should notice a difference in a couple of days! Just remember to warm up your feet BEFORE anything OK? good luck and health!

Have you gotten any physical therapy for this at all? I agree with what Bambi has posted but I also have to wonder if they've given you anyone to help you walk again. Because that sounds like something they should have gone over with you! Can you let me know?

Hi HFG: Just posting about your comment! I've had more foot and hip surgeries than I can care to count! And when it ISN'T about your foot, they don't offer Physio! They would for this lady's knee and Femur! My son also has had many surgeries and they just basically concentrate on the injured part! It's when the part of the body that Atrophies which actually causes more pain! Like Frozen Shoulder!!!! That is excruciating, and all you can do is stretch it out slowly and with lots of warmth. So basically she has Frozen Feet - for lack of a better word! And she just need to keep them warm and pliable!! Physio is more about moving an injured joint and bone, not so much about massage! Where I live massage isn't even covered, only physio is!!! >:( Just an FY! Thanks for the continued support by the way!! :-D

I see. Thanks for the clarification on it. I didn't realize that was important to do that so thanks for letting me know! I figured massage would help with warmth but I wasn't aware that warmth was all you'd need. Thanks :) And no problem of COURSE ;)
