:-D I tell you what... I've never posted anything on any blog that I've read until now... resaon why? It's been about 21 days since I've taken methadone. Don't expect to get over it in a week... and don't try to do it cold turkey... at least if ur like me... I was doing oc's, morphine, dope, etc... which led to methadone, and unfortunately it was the hardest to kik. But there are ways to do it without using opiates or narcotics. TRAMADOL!! I was on Methadone for about eight years... longer than most I've seen anywhere posted... so if I can do it, anyone can. Talk to a DR about Tramadol (it's non-narcotic and still isn't easy)... but give yourself TWO WEEKS... and you will be a different person!! I'm 33 and realized in the past 22 days that I"ve been in a fog for the last decade because of opiates. They affect you in ways you can't imagine untill your body and mind have actually adjusted to NOT having them. Especially Methadone because of its long half life. Talk to a Dr. that will prescribe you Tramadol and other NON Narcotic medications (not Oxy/ morphine/ suboxen even... its still an opiate)to help you out; there are a lot of them today and suboxen is not the way to go... it is an OPIATE as well that you will have to kick... I started on methadone at about 100mgs a day... and took it for about 8 years gradually weening myself down to 15mg then switched to Tramadol... and it has worked!! Not fun for two or three weeks depending on how much, etc... but there are ways and coming out on the other end with a clear head and the clarity I once had has been the best thing that ever happened to me! I' feel like I regain another piece of my mind every minute now and am amazed!! All I can say is.. find a Dr. that is there to help you in the right way... its sad that there are a lot of crooked doctors out there who feed off of the addiction problems that my generation faces thanks to huge pharmaceuctical manufacturing companies, etc... but good Doctors are out there!! Take the non narcotic route and you can succeed... I swear I only realized all of this myself over the past 3 days... having still felt like c**p till now; it varies depending on dosage and duration... but I tell everyone... the other side of the tunnel is much brighter!! Stick with it and talk to friends and family... whatever you need to do... but it can be done and the result is much better than what I thought I was getting from the opiates all along... literally my brain receptors are changing and its all for the better; check out cymbalta now that they are prescribing 120mg daily for pain management... its all about the right doctor... and the right method... but it can be done and you won;t regret it. Good luck!!

Hey. Listen to this. My poor boyfriend, terminal cancer patient was put on 400 mgs (yes, that's 400 as in four hundred) split into 2 doses every twelve hours for pain. He was on hospice. He started to get better and decided he wanted to take treatment for the cancer and would go to a pain specialist. The pain specialist was leery about writing for such a high dose of Methadone so he requested that we titrate down. Well, the boyfriend decided since he has a great deal of expererience with kicking methadone, heroin and had only recently kicked 40 mgs of MSO4 administered at 6 times a day that he would just go cold turkey. We're about 4 days into it now. He's been at this dose for about 2 months having been titrated up from 150 mgs BID beginning in April of 08. I have no idea what to do for this poor man. He's a wreck, in terrible pain from the w/d and from the cancer. Please pray for him and me. Pray for him to be able to kick and survive and for me to have the patience and the skill to weather the worst of it. He refuses to go to the hospital, since his experience says that they won't do anything to help him once they get a look at his tracks. Makes me miss heroin.

Tramadol is also addicting. It is not an opiate, but it is a strange drug. Many people who have become addicted to tramadol have a much harder time getting off it than do those who are getting off opiates. I work in harm reduction, and have seen a number of clients end up getting on Suboxone to get off Tramadol. Also, detoxing from Tramadol is far more dangerous than getting off opiates, and could even cause seizures. Tramadol is NOT the answer to getting off methadone, in my opinion.

Not sure where your gathering your info. But tramadol detox ( if happens ) is not physically close to the detox you'll go through with most any opiot, Using Tramadol to come off Methadone is like taking baby asprin for cancer. Post like the one above are irresponsible and lead people down a road that will end in lots of pain.
If you believe that tramadol will help ( you specifically) then by all means do what works, but just because you believe that does not make it so for another.
Remember you can get off any drugs (street or prescription) with methadone with zero withdrawal, but you can't get off Methadone by using any thing with out feeling the pain.
Methadone is a MF to kick and you should be prepared both mentally and physically, if you've been on a steady dose from 40-240mg aday for 5-10-15 years I strongly recommend many other meds other than tramadol. You will need them, this isn't a 5-7 day deal strap in for 14 solid days and another 14 days of being wiped out. Good luck its well worth it after 45-60 days clean.

i have been on pain killers for 43 yrs because of accident ---from pills--morphine pumps --stimulators---i finally got nerve damage from so many back surgeries----11 in all----no amt of pain killers nor neurotine would touch the pain in my feet the doc told me my last option was to try methadone---i knew nothing about it so i looked it up sitting in the doctors office and i didnt see anything good and it scared me to death at the time. the doc told me it was my last option so i had no choice as i was thinking of suicide---this was how much pain it was causing me.
i started on 1 pill in the morning and 1 at night---was 10 mg pills..this went on for 5 days----then 1 pill in the morning and 2 at night----for 5 days----then 2 in the morning and 2 at night---and so on till i got to 3 in the morning and 3 at night..
this was working good with no pain--problem with this was i was in bed and no life because it put me to sleep for days---i had to back down the way i went up--i am at 1 in the morning and 1 and a half at night---this is ok but it does not take all the pain on such a low dose
it is ok for me because i am use to pain and it does enough that i can have a life and take other pain meds to help the cause
i am still afraid of the methadone but without it i dont know what i would do----i am 72 yrs old soon --- with a newly wed 27 yr old wife ----i will have to take it the rest of my life--i was told---so has anyone got any other ideas for my situation
i dont have a big dose so would it still be bad situation to get off of---and have taken most everything made for pain

I’m currently tapering down at 5mg a week from 60mg for over a year and I feel very little withdrawal if any at all. At worst, the day I taper down I feel a little tired and a tiny bit achy at the end of the day but that’s it. I know everyone is different but that has been my experience. I’ve found that going down 5mg a week has kept me comfortable. I’m on 35mg now so I hope to be totally off in the next six months. Good luck to you and your recovery!

You should make sure you get your facts straight before you recommend drugs to people. I believe that Tramadol is in fact an opioid medication

Post acute withdrawal from methadone will... last for months for some. I’ve had to go cold turkey a couple times from methadone but only for up to 3 days and by that 3rd day I’m absolutely miserable and ready to die to stop the pain. I’ve kicked oxy and heroin and benzos many times but something about that methadone is evil! It doesn’t let go of its grasp on you without a vicious fight
