Hi. I’m experiencing sudden, intense pain in the area just beneath the lower ribs in the back. Also, my urine is a bit cloudy and smells unusually strong. I have a reason to believe that I have Pyelonephritis so I’m wondering where should I go to get diagnosed?

See your doctor. He will ask you about other medical problems, any past infections and your recent symptoms. He will also check your temperature, heart rate and blood pressure, and will press on your abdomen and flanks to see if there is tenderness near the kidney. To diagnose pyelonephritis, your doctor will test your urine, and probably your blood, for any evidence of infection. People with pyelonephritis may have bacteria in both their blood and their urine and it usually takes about 24 to 48 hours to identify it.
